Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Aug. 13-15, the 31st Annual Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races presented by Chrysler. Over 300 of the finest historic racing and sports cars competed in 14 race groups that span nearly every era of motorsports history. This year may be the biggest in the event’s 31-year history, Ferrari – the most revered name in automobiles and auto racing – was the featured marque. |
The Le Mans Tiger crew was Darrell and Sharon Mountjoy, chief wrench Gordon England, Historian and cook John Dandy, and myself. We also had help from others including Steve Alcala and Dan Walters. CAT Member and Tiger racer Alan Densen and friends hosted a rib and chicken BBQ Saturday night up in the campgrounds. C.A.T. and S.T.O.C. Banners were displayed proudly in the pits and many Tiger people stopped by to see the cars and wish us well. Both Gordon E. and John D. came all the way from England and Alan Curry of N.Z. extended his U.S. visit to SUNI 4 to come spectate.
One highlight with all of us F1 fans was that Ferrari F1 Team Clienti had taken up residence in the new garages on the pit lane about 50 feet from our own assigned pit. After unpacking the many containers and crates Thursday we were treated to the last 10 years of veteran F1 Ferraris lined up in the garages. At that time an open door to get up as close as the mechanics to the cars. See the Ferrari picture pages.
Sunday's race was no surprise the leaders blasted off into the distance while Dan Walters put the Monster Tiger to the limit and had a good race in mid pack. Darrell is gaining experiance as a driver in competetive events with the Le Mans Tiger. Although he did not challange Dan's lap times all weekend both he and the car improved and most important there were no expensive mishaps.
