Can the tailshaft be removed with the speedo cable driven gear in place??

Have to replace the rear seal and don't want to damage the gear.

Thanks

Ya gotta back it out for safety sake. It will roll off the drive gear coming out, BUT, the problem will happen on re-installation as it tries to roll back on. You might get lucky, or not. OR, simply pry out the old seal and gently tap in the new one.

Thanks.

I just didn't know what held it in or what it looked like.

It's not covered, mentioned or even shown in the service manual.

Every other vehicle I have had, the gear came out with the cable.

The dreaded insert

Thanks.

OK: I'm going to assume that you pulled the cable and there ain't nuthin' on it. In which case you have the original insert type of fitting stuck into the tranny and it's holding what you are familiar with. No sweat, it will pull out with "gentle" coaxing (not a BFH). The driven gear with it's securing circlip should be waiting for you on the other end. This type of fitting loves to leak oil so it should move fairly easily.

I saw that the driven gear retainer had internal threads so I popped a bolt in and pulled the driven gear out.

I have a 17 tooth driven and a yellow driver gear.
