There must be something wrong with the vehicle/vin if the seller is being so catty about not posting it - he obviously knows enough to know posting it would provide important information for a would be buyer as well as documenting the car for the future. (such as it having been a moth eaten rust pile in 2015 when it goes for auction as a "pristine rust free example of the rare MkII" in 2017) One of my Dad's great pieces of advice for investing was "if it feels like something's wrong, SOMETHING'S WRONG, walk away".

p.s., to the previous poster, that's back east salt on the road rust, coastal rust from the beach salt air attacks from the top down. You have to live within several blocks of the beach and leave the car parked outside to get that, even.

Never understood why people black out the plates, but will drive on public roads with it exposed! :)

I've used this feature many times. of course a sunbeam does not have a 17 character VIN so I doubt there would be any info. I also see a lot of car photos on the net that have the license plate covered so no one can pull up info using the number since that's one of the options available. you also will get info on previous owners so withholding the VIN could prevent prying eyes or hackers. that's part of a thing called privacy.

Call it paranoid , but there is GOOD reason for it . The "Big Boys" of the car theft world prey on this info , as full disclosure is public record thru most DMV's .
With the address info in hand , a thief can scope out your layout , and clean house later .
I'm sure All have seen "Gone in 60 seconds" ? This happens in the real world too .
Not all are fortunate to have a big shop to lock things up in . Even that parts car , parked in the weeds , etc........ is target material .
I even had attempted theft happen at car shows from sticky fingers !

Guys earlier in the thread I brought up Rebecca's law. My bad this was the first Rebecca Schaeffer, a 80's starlet who had her lic. plate info. pulled from the DMV " it used to cost 3 bucks" and was murdered. There has been another "Rebecca's law enacted" she had her last name attached to the law.

It does little to block out the lic. plate in a f/s ad. It many make it easier to make a scam ad.

If you are a dealer you are required to list a vin by law at least in Cali.
On eBay their policy says it.

The seller just needed a nudge in right direction.

anyone that has listed a car for sale on e bay will notice that the VIN is not required to be listed unless the car is 1981 or later.

These 'forum Police' as you call them have prevented someone from buying a reshelled Mk2 Tiger at a later date and losing a small fortune into the bargain.

Would you like to rethink your position or do you still think that they should mind their own business?

Gary, even before Norm decided to start taking pictures of vin tags guys were doing it to build their own database. Our 66Mk1a Jim inherited a boat load of tag pictures and cuts and snips from the internet when he is bored. Jim is a valued club member and a Grand Poo Bah of a fellow club up in your end of the world. I have a connection to guys I never would if I had not of been a deal maker on AC filter housings. I am pretty darn sure I have talked to this eBay seller and have traded with him. He traded more than fairly with me and my partners. I do not doubt that the number, would have or already has been disclosed to registry. I do believe your comment has merit but guys are concerned with the follow on innocent nube buyer getting gypped on a six figure rebody.

I bought or was a party to 4.5 Tigers and felt nervous all but with the one TAC'ed car when I could actually focus on the build and the sins on the previous caretakers and not if it had this or that Jensen hallmark. Well 1/2 car I bought I did not care as it was a borderline Tac able wreck with no vin Jal trans or rear end and I paid more than asking price.

As for others comments being a son of a beach I am glad I never drove on Daytona Beach like the former owner of that wreck must have done. It is true salt air goes top down but sand and salt sure consumed that one.

The STOC reshelling thread IMHO did more harm than good and please keep the discussion civil.

The seller is not being honest - from a previous sell - "Du to healt problem i have decided to sell my MKII (B382100418LRXFE). The car need a FULL restoration, rocker panels, floors, x member........... Car has all the important parts, moulding, grill and upper grill finisher"

Seller stated in auction ("These items did NOT come with this car") that the separate auction for these items are from a different car.

Let's Not Jump to Conclusions

In a previous posting, there is references to a previous offer to sell for the MkII in question. It looks like that was nearly 5 years ago. It is very possible the current seller did not buy the car from the seller in the 5-year-old ad. It is very likely someone with a MkII (or who knew the eBay value of certain parts) bought the car and stripped the important bits off and then passed the car along.
