Hey guys, been a while. While my Tiger went off to a fine lad Down Under I've done Lotus Elans, '70 Boss 302's, 1st Gen Broncos. Then I spotted a Tiger down here at the C&C in Rancho Santa Fe Ca. and it got me to thinking about the good folks on this site.

I was dumb founded to see how little activity there is on here. Gawd, the site used to be teaming with comments from many and now comments from few.

Anyway, how ya'll and hope everyone is well. Yes, after going thru many old cars I probably should have kept my Hollywood Hills Tiger find but no, I had to venture into different ponds.

Current project is a 1950 Willys cj3a bone stock of course. I don't do mods

Got the their tongues. Your buddies like Gene Padgett have left the building.
But his son is an active Facebook type.
You could say the writings on the wall but it'd be a virtual wall.

Good heavens...it's young Michael!

Good to hear you're still kicking on, when I didn't get an email response aaaages ago I just assumed you'd been abducted by aliens...or somesuch.

Your last Sunbeam purchase is still mid resto. In fact just today I was stripping the donor drivers door of Carnival Red/Midnight Blue and Rootes grey primer. It's been a very long term project....

Anyway, good to hear you're still getting grease under your nails.

Down Under Lad.

Hey Mike,

Nice to hear from you.... Glad you are still fiddling with elans and Broncos.

I was just talking to lance about your old tiger yesterday...

Well boys, things haven't changed much except my age and...never mind.
Turned 70 this year and still listening to INXS and X. Got more wrinkles than used crushed Christmas wrapping. I had lost all of my contacts a short time ago as my billion year old computer decided it was time to take itself out. Also I'll never do facebook or amazon. It's just a thing with me, cranky and old.

Been busy doing the rescue dog thing as I prefer to be around animals than people. They are far more trustworthy. Sold my casa and moved up the coast a tad to a town called Encinitas, which is still in San Diego County.
Been slowed a bit with worn out body parts but so be it. The Docs simply cut, remove and install new bits and I'm on my way.
Here are a few pix of the Willys. Runs great but needs just a little attention to be a good grocery getter. The art of driving slow.

Lance...please do not rush the Tiger work, take your time...:p
Michael...stay on him !!!

Hi Mike, I just wanted to point out to those that don't know your post is very SD.

You have a 4x4 project that is old but isn't rusty, your dependable daily driver is a white Toyota pickup, you listen to X and you've retired to north county.

Future topics could include the Old Ox, Foggy's Notion, the Murph, Old Town and maybe long lost bands like the Blitz Brothers.

Tiger Tales

In the recent tiger tales the president suggests upgrading this software on the forum. I say hallelujah to that.
As a club we need to find ways to provide value to the community even if they're not a member. People go to Facebook because it's free and easy.
Their marketplace is free to boot.
What saves us is that it's not very searchable. What hurts us is that they've got more people we're willing to answer the same questions over and over again. A recent post on Facebook a guy had over a hundred responses on why his car would starve for fuel at high RPMs. After spending hundreds of dollars he figured out that he needed a new air cleaner element. I can see the mechanic now trying to order an air cleaner filter at the parts counter then giving up and putting the same crusty thing back on.. As I look at my hands that are beat the crap from changing spark plugs on a car with S and S headers and SVO heads I know why guys sell their cars. I'd have sold mine yesterday if somebody would have walked up the driveway....

Just adding my 2cents worth; ask yourself is CATS bringing value, enjoyment and camaraderie (helping others) in ways that other places like Facebook does? If the answer is no then we better start finding ways to correct this. In my short 6 years I have noticed less interaction on this site, where as with Facebook there is sometimes to much. Also 6 years ago there were many offers of help and many of those people I still communicate and pick their brain.

Yes, some may say that Covid 19 maybe the cause, or that it’s because of the aging club population, or that its because the new members feel intimated by the “older” long time members. I have to ask “are we letting other offer suggestions” or are we open minded to only the ways of the past?

Of course this is only my opinion,

One thing that could definitely benefit from an upgrade is photo posting. Unless I'm missing something, you can't just post a photo from your computer. You need a host site (which I don't have or want) to post a picture with http... I was using tiny pic but they folded. Even that was a pain to upload to, then download here.

Posting Photos

I am not sure what you mean about "just post a photo from your computer". You do not need a host site. I do not have a host site and add photos and other files frequently to my posts. Near the bottom of all the areas of this Forum is Forum Questions and notes from Admin. In both sections you will find threads about posting photos by including them in your post.

There are size limitations since our allowable storage space is not limitless.

If a person has any problems posting their photos, drop a not to one of the Administrators or Moderators and they will be happy to help.

On what Dave said. Plus I would add that we lost a huge amount of content because of hosting sites going belly up.

Cal44, I met you when I first got a tiger down at your house I can't remember why I was down there but I looked at a car that was nearby. We certainly appreciate your over 400 posts to the forum back in the day when you were active.
Look there's lots of places where you can hang out on the internet, No mask required. You can even go back to the ancient email list to ask your questions.
That is searchable but it's really long-winded and you really got to want to know something.
What CAT has going for it sort of is it's searchability. This is hampered by the search window not cooperating with Android devices. I literally have to open an email browser type in the word I want copy it and then drag it over and paste it into the search window. Most people just throw up their hands and say I'll ask the question someplace else. I'd like to say if you build it they will come but that's been said before on a movie. People have plenty of choices nowadays and they go where it's easy , rewarding and cheap. We could be two out of three or three out of three. I think the club's too concerned about making money on the forum when it's cash cow is selling headers. Certainly you probably only need one set of headers on one car.
But I can tell you from personal experience having the wrong set and having to move your steering column to get to your spark plugs is wrestling with a Tiger. After talking with the doctor and Jim, I realized I just had to bite the bullet pull the steering column or decide to cut some nice fender well vents into my car that doubled this spark plug removal points. Help when you need it is vital and it's not like we have an updated shop notes. Let's work harder to make it our community not Facebook's.

David, thanks for the tips. I looked at both of those sections and only saw info on resizing photos. Here's what I get when I try to add a picture:

Oh, that's right, I can't insert a picture. Here's what it says:

"www.catmbr.org says"

"please enter the URL of your image"

Then it has a rectangular box with:

"http://" followed by a lengthy empty space where you are supposed to put the URL of you photo.

At the bottom are two boxes:

"OK" and "CANCEL"

I still don't see a way to insert a picture without a hosting site.

How to Add Photos to Your Post

After a person clicks on the Attachments icon (picture of a paper clip) at the top of the post being written, a window pops up - Manage Attachments. There are 2 areas in this window. The top area says Upload File from your Computer and the lower area says Upload File from a URL. In the top area (the one you want to add one of your photos to your post), on the left are buttons labelled Browse and next to it is (at first) No file chosen. Click on the top of the Browse buttons and a new window opens. It is a copy of File explorer which you can use to select the file for the photo you wish to add. In this File explorer window, you click on the file you want and then click on the open box. The name of that file is now shown next to the Browse button. Now to repeat the process for any additional files you wish to add to your post, click on the next Browse button that does not have a file name next to it. You can not add more than 10 files. Next - and this is very important - in the Manage Attachments window, click on the Upload button.

This works for all of the file types that are allowed - not just photos.

I suspect you were clicking not on the Attachments icon (paper clip) but on the Insert Image icon (mountain with sun).

Thanks for giving me a chance to clarify how to add photos to your posts.

If anyone has problems uploading files, please drop me a Private Message and I would be happy to help out.

Like this?

Yes, you are correct that I was using the 'insert image' box, which made total sense to me. Thanks for the specific instructions. I hope it helps someone else. Just in case, I'm including a picture of what I saw every time I tried to upload a photo that was not on a hosting site:

Yeah, love the searchyness of the CAT site. As a newbie this was great for me to be able to ask detailed questions and get great answers from the experts. And most know I like pictures better than words, CAT wins there too. I hate Facebook and deleted my FB account years ago, but reluctantly rejoined just to see what was going on over at the Tiger FB. Different group over there for sure.

People are creatures of habit and will just continue to use what conveniently works for them, even if a better choice is out there. If CAT ever updates their hosting software I suggest they choose something that is compatible with the TapaTalk app or similar for both iPhone and Android. That way folks are not limited to using just a browser on a phone, or being tethered to a PC. A user interface via smartphone is key moving forward.

The question becomes is there value in the annual CAT dues? As a new owner, or anyone that works on them a lot, definitely yes. For those who already have that pristine Tiger that maybe gets driven once a week if lucky, maybe not so much, and FB suffices.

I think the CAT site could benefit from adding a "build" forum where folks can post progress on their cars. There's a "Your Tiger's Story" area which seems to indicate it's only meant to tell a brief history of your car. I ignored the description and posted on and on, ad nauseam, about my project. ;). It was good to have others chime in with advice.

Bravo Ken

And Dave if it's easier they'll come.
I know 2 guys with flip phones.
One of them posts more on the SAOCA site because it is easy. Their software saves your work automatically even if you leave their site by accident. There's a lot of Tiger guys there as well.
Ken your Tiger's story is the most read thread and commented on. As a former IT guy I wish we had your input at a meeting where it could make a difference.

Ken,

I interpret Your Tiger's Story to include stories about Tigers IN PROGRESS and I agree with you that it is appropriate (actually great!) for one to include updates on his or hers car. I would love to read about more.

How many of us can ever say our car is ever "DONE"?

Love to

Hmmm it'd be easy to call a car done in my time zone. Done does not include regular servicing. Then there's fitting my raincoat, I mean hardtop Dave ;) Hopefully at the meeting at Sarris's shop things can be discussed as to how to add value content and survive in the multi platform that is mostly all free range www.

I too have been away for a few years - but a friend is building a Tiger and it got me thinking again - #7 could be the one. haha. I am following his build and I may pull the plug again - not getting any younger especially since I bought my first Tiger about 40 yrs ago. Hope to see more of you.
