289 5 bolt

Steven,

I'm not aware of an issue with the 302 crank switch.. the 6 bolt 302 that came out shortly after the 289's swap in.. and the 5 bolt and 6 bolt 289 cranks interchange to my understanding.. so dont think you are looking for a specific early 302 crank.. just a standard 302 Windsor crank should be fine.

I know a few people who did them and they picked them up for $80.. had them turned and balanced and bolted them in, I dont think they were a specific it me.. maybe ask the parts people you spoke to to clarify what years of 302 or part number they recommend.

The external balance weight size could likely be different but that's an easy thing to switch over.

FYI: If you intend to use the small 160 tooth flywheel (157 replacement ring gear) and maintain the 28 oz. balance arrangement, then look for the earlier 302 crankshaft. I'm not certain of the change year, but the 50 oz. balance with the 164 tooth larger flywheel has been an issue with some of our customer's personal attempts. We get them after they can't stop the car from shaking!

302 Cranks

I have a couple extra early 302 cranks (2 piece seal). You can have them cheap, but shipping down under could be expensive.

heads up

Hey Randy, I had remembered the balancer but forgot about the flywheel.. i guess it gets back to what i was saying.. might need to change a few bits.. but for got the flywheel!

Went to the shed and uncovered the 289. knew it had low miles. The bores measured at 3.99" all round the top and removed 2 pistons and 3.99 at the bottom. Very nice, will have a machine shop check but it looks very much like a hone and rering/bearing job. If that works may chase the 302 crank.

Gary, I too would be interested in a 302 crank if you're still interested in selling them. TIA.
