40+ Year Old Cat 2" Exhaust Pipes (and muffler)

It was over 40 years ago that I ordered a CAT exhaust system for my '66 Tiger. The car has been garaged the whole time and is now being restored. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the good old CAT exhaust pipes are still usable. No holes or areas weak enough to prevent use. The mufflers are not usable. I plan to replace the CAT mufflers with Flowmaster HP-2 18" (total length of 24") mufflers as they appear to be a good fit with these old pipes. I will coat the old pipes inside and out to protect them as best I can. With the limited mileage that I will add to the Tiger I think the old pipes will be fine. Picture of system before any cleaning is attached.

Good luck with your exhaust pipe restoration. The stock exhaust system is too restrictive, but for those of us who want to maintain our cars as stock, the 2" LAT exhaust system would be the way to go - if there were any copies being made today. As I recall, the mufflers were Mitchell and look about as long as those in your photos, but were round in cross section. And I do not recall any hangers being attached to the mufflers themselves.

Well, I purchased the 2" system from CAT all those years ago. Maybe, back then, it was copied from the LAT system. I may never have my Tiger judged for stockness but it is mostly stock. I am missing a few parts that are made of unobtainium, like an original air filter assembly (those that ARE available are out of my price range). I'd say it's 80-90% stock. I maintain my Tiger for Fun, always have. I have never been disappointed. The Tiger has always done everything I have asked it to do.

We got a set that was probably about that vintage when we bought our tiger. It's since been installed. Sounds amazing.

Pic from when we got the Tiger. Hope it lasts half that long!

My Tiger came with a set of those mufflers. The body is definitely oval... They have been parked in the corner of my garage for about twenty years. Unless they have some value as a pattern for someone to replicate these old mufflers, they are just going to go in the recycling bin.
