adjusting the sun visors

I tried to install an old pair of sun visors today - something none of my prior Sunbeams ever had.

They fit Ok but won't stay in place.

They just hang down.

What is supposed to make them stay adjusted to some angle other than hanging straight down?

There is a small spring in the center chrome mount, on each side, but that isn't helping much.

The chrome mount is warped as well, possibly contributing to the problem.

Thanks in advance for any info to help resolve this problem.

Sun Visors

Allan - as I recall the metal stub towards the center of the car is supposed to be notched partially to mate with similarly shaped notches in the metal center piece mounted to the top of the windscreen. We need to look at some while at Pat's this weekend...

The visor end mounts on the windscreen frame had the square notches in them. Being made of pot metal, these would round off or the end mounts would crack or break and then the visors will droop. Eric

FWIW, Sunbeam Specialties used to sell a somewhat pricy version of the mounts made out of polished stainless steel "for strength". Pricy, but a solution if other fixes do not work.

One thought that comes to mind is using one of those epoxy steel putty products to remold any now rounded squared corners in the mounts, if that is the problem. Maybe an appropriately sized, squared wooden or plastic tip of sorts could help shape the hole will the epoxy sets up. Have not tried that myself however. :)

Barnyard Fix It

I used some clear silicon in the outboard mount holes to increase the friction. Assemble the whole thing in the up position and allow 24 hours for it to cure. It lasts quite a while with limited use . . . . .

The ends of the brackets do tend to mushroom out...I used rubber tips (similar to the silicone solution for the problem), AND, slightly stiffer springs shortened to fit. Kind of a pain to do, but it worked.
