A long time opinion is that the back of the Sunbeam V8 badge was/is blackened w/silver lettering. MK II owner TK says that his were and are clear backed ?? His ownership started in 76 w/original paint, lots-O-rust and obvious undisturbed badging. There is no evidence of any black on them! I doubt if they bleached themselves, so is there any knowledge of these being a stock item for MK II use?? Curious me

As a manufacturer point of view, that would be a bad idea.

Unless the badge (we don't need no stinkin badges) is weather tight to the body, dirt will get behind it and it will look like poo in short order.

Mine Were Black

I have owned my Mk II since August 1970 and can say that the back of the V8 badges were black. My car's color is Carnival Red, but I would be surprised if some colors of cars got black-backed badges and others got clear-backed badges. It would be pretty easy to buff the black off and I remember the black was starting to flake off back in the mid 70s when I would pull the badges out while washing and drying the car.

A fellow on the mailing 'list' recently expressed interest in getting a couple of clear ones and of course a bit of a debate followed. The consensus on there was that they all came with a black painted back IIRC ...

I happened to have a pair of 'clear' repro ones but I have no idea when or where they were made... they now have a new owner ;)

Jim,

I have a set of those repros too, got them off ebay about 4 years back, guy sold them to me as real .. when they arrived i could see why he had taken blury pictures.. they were quite rippled across the front and had the round tabs as per your picture.. still have them sitting around somewhere.

Clear-Backed V8 Badges

I believe the plastic reproduction plastic V8 badges sold by CAT were or are clear on the back. Perhaps this is the source. You can check out CAT parts by going to the CAT home page.

I found this pic in the CAT parts catalogue... looks the same to me !! No price listed which usually means N.L.A.

Michael is correct, the clear part is a bit rippled...
