another odd eBay spike

There is a pair of what appear to be the repro "SUNBEAM V8" badge inserts and the chrome shield surrounds on eBay. Bidding has gone very high for what appears to be regular repro parts available at a fraction of the cost from sunbeam specialties.... They are not even accurate as they have the frosted silver finish as opposed to the originals reflective chrome lettering.... What's going on?

They are very nice looking with the encapsulated letters etc. Better than mine for sure. Being new to Tigers I don't have the experience to judge what is absolutely correct. However I do have many years of sourcing parts and pieces for other projects. NOS to me, is an unused factory item. The term NOS is tossed around quite liberally these days. From the pics they smack of re-pop to me. JMHO

it's a pretty simple explanation. the seller listed at the right time and there is a buyer that wants the badges and has the means to pay whatever it takes. he sees no reason to ask others if he should buy them nor is he asking if they're 100% correct. the seller makes a good profit and both parties are happy. this is not the first time it's happened and it won't be the last.

I would assume they think they are new originals..

I am aware some people always think selling things for extreme profits to the unweary is a great thing... Probably says more about the seller than buyer.

Support sunbeam parts suppliers

Part #ET 105D price 18.50 each for plastic motifs
Part #ET 66 price 17.95 each for chrome shields

Or apparently buy from rick and try and catch out the unweary...

Those appear to be high quality repros based on the rear photos. All of the repros I've seen are flat pieces with the lettering printed on the back side. Original pieces are 3 - dimensional like these with the lettering inset and chrome plated with flat black painted on the back.

we don't live in a perfect world but we do live in one that thrives on profits. our sunbeam suppliers have to make a profit also and the percentage of profit would amaze some people. common sense would tell you that selling parts is their business, not their hobby.

Serious shill bidding going on. Top bidder is new, only bid on this item and has bid eight time thus far.

Sunbeam specialties repros are correct 3d plastic and have been available as such for at least 20 years....

The ones you mention are similar to what cat used to sell.

Making 3d ones as these are easy the problem is flash chroming the letters, if the surface inside the letters is not a smooth polished finish you get the satin silver look instead of mirror. The repros have the satin finish as in the auction photos.

They are an 18.50 ea part.

You seem to have missed the point or not understood what's happening .. Or more likely the usual drill of just trying to be problematic.. But let's give the benefit of the doubt and go with you have misunderstood ...

The issue is someone is selling a repro part easily available from our suppliers for a very reasonable price and selling it for a ludicrous amount.

This is either a very naive set of bidders or as duke suggests some dishonest bidding. Either way this HURTS our suppliers... Nobody has an issue with them.. They sell the parts all day long at a fair price... This is about the very odd or unscrupulous bidding in this auction.

someone is saying they are reproductions so that means they came from a sunbeam supplier at some point in time. there are sellers like myself that bought items many years ago. I have items in my shop that I bought before Michael was even born. I guess I should be ashamed of selling things I no longer need and selling for a nice profit. maybe I should sell all of my NOS directional signal switches for what I paid for them. maybe some of my other NOS items should be sold for next to nothing. I bet I could sell many of the truck load of items I bought from TT when he was going out of business and recoup only the money I paid for those items. in the real world it just doesn't work that way. maybe some should notice that there are several sellers that buy items from sunbeam suppliers and then post on e bay and make a profit. I bet rick doesn't care. shame on tiger owners for selling their tigers for many times what they paid for the car! if only we bartered with beads or trinkets instead of the dollar. e bay might not exist. then no one would have reason to gripe about e bay sellers and buyers. here in the states e bay money is tax free if you stay under 200 transactions and dollar sales under 20K. that makes selling on e bay even better. that's the American way!

Ha ha

"eBay money is tax free to 20 grand," LOL!!!!!!

Please keep on topic and the topic is not the evils of Capitalism only the stupidity and self serving easily manipulated eBay system.

The greater problem is the information on these silly little cars:D is hoarded or confined in a copyrighted book and in the minds of pro restorer and those in the know. Micheal keep up the good work.

Please notice I will tag NOS part id.

warren,
remember that my cars have been restored by one of the best in the business. I know I've paid him for a lot of parts on the cars at today's prices and he has had them for many years. maybe California has a different set of rules for everything but it's not the first time you've been wrong when it comes to e bay.

I was the person who asked the question if these had shiny chrome or a frosted appearance. My 66 1A has the incorrect badge motifs (Powered by Ford V8). It also has the Chrysler Pentastar on the lower right. My understanding is it should have the "Sunbeam V8" motifs as Chrysler didn't want to advertise a Ford engine. I also called SS and they are out of the motifs as of yesterday anyway. They told me they will be receiving a shipment soon. I was interested in these until the seller answered my question and the price shot sky high. For that amount of money I would like original NOS. They do look nice though. I have been known to pay more for something than I probably should on ebay but sometimes you do if you are trying to return your Tiger to as original as you can. I have also learned from you guys which is why I will be ordering some from Rick when he gets 'em in.:D

It will be interesting if the new repros manage to get a reflective chrome finish, I doubt they will as you would really need to cast them and have a very smooth mold on those lettered areas and it's more likely they will be cnc... But it would be great to get them visually accurate.. here's hoping!!!

it will be interesting to see how many will ever notice the difference. one of the best in the sunbeam repro parts business is having them made so maybe only one person would find fault with them.

warren,
I sent you a message concerning e bay sales and income. it's real easy to understand if you read e bay's explanation. it's called a 1099-K
