My Tiger restoration is nearing complete frame off completion and I have a question on insurance. What company do you use (and if you don’t mind telling me how much do you have it insured for)?

Has anyone used a Certified Appraiser, if so who and what are the costs associated? Were you happy with the appraisal?

I have contacted three insurance companies:

• American Collectors wants all receipts, which I have but this is well over a 50 pages. I bought my car in 1973 they don’t factor in what the replacement car cost is at this point. They only want to cover the restoration so far. So if something happens I don’t have the actual body covered.
• Grundy wants either all receipts or a certified appraisal, the appraisal cost I found was $450.00.
• Hagarty’s (almost twice the other companies for same amount of insurance).

I have five Sunbeams insured with Hagerty. My suggestion is to contact their local agent and have him personally look at the car, have him take photos and the proceed from there. Once there is an agreed value they will pay up to that for repairs or loss of the car. They also have a road service policy available at extra cost. I saw this used in S Dakota in 2009 when a friend had engine problems on I 90. They sent a roll back that transported the car to the SUNI hotel and dropped the Tiger on his trailer. I've had other insurance companies over the years but I'm sold on Hagerty.

I agree with 65beam. I also use Hagerty. When I acquired my Tiger I spoke with their main office, described the car and sent them photos. We agreed upon the value over the phone. Since that time, as the value of my cars have risen, I simply call them, discuss my desired new value and they agreed to it on the phone.
I also used their road service and you do not need to be broken down out on the road somewhere. Once my Vette would not start/run right in my garage. After days of troubleshooting, I finally gave up. They came with a flatbed and took it to the local “Vette guy” for the repair.
Finally, their claim service is excellent. Once at a car show I had my trunk open. As I turned away for a moment a gust of wind blew the trunk lid closed. It slammed down and the leading edge of the lid jumped the rubber seal and took a huge chunk out of the paint on the body. I took a photo and had it repaired. I finally called them and explained what had happened. They said send them the photo and copy of the repair invoice. Within a couple of days they sent me a check for the full amount of the repair.

Yes, there are probably less expensive companies but they have proved their worth to me.

We may have an advantage in this area since our agent in Beaver Creek is a long time Tiger owner.
 
Just for comparison, I went through my local Farmers agent who insured my Tiger though J.C. Taylor. We agreed on a value and this is the third year and cost began at just under a$ 1,000 and this year dropped to $821.00, including towing and roadside assistance. Haven't made any claims yet, so don't know about service. Cliff

I wrote for J.C. and also bought the policy mostly cause I got paid to write my own policy.

Each state has it's own rules and comparison should be made within the same state and territory, oh wait The D.O.I. said in prop 103 that ins.co. can't use zip code to rate so they changed the name to claims cost factor. The companies got the last laugh on 103's implementation

The big print giveth and the small print taketh away,and a quote has limited small print and a "see policy for terms and blah blah..."

What's a bigger deal is the form used and exclusions that could bite you. Sadly it's like you have to buy it so you can see what's in it. I have been shopping myself but postponed until I get 2 cars running and back on road again. Normally I would have a comp. only but Farmers etc. were not offering that. I recently found that Grundy does offer the comp only or storage coverage. I was rather nervous during the slow rolling quake yesterday and in my mind I pictured a friends MK2 with overloaded shelves above it.

I did get a friends Haggerty policy and its in the car and going to the next meeting for our O.P. to look over.
 
Since you included pictures of your beautiful engine in your post, I do want to ask a question not related to the theme (insurance). You've got your alternator positioned very low and you're using a wide belt (I assume you're using an electric fan). The Tiger frame does interfere with alternator positions. The generator and usual alternator positions are to mount above the frame. It is possible to mount the alternator below the frame, but that puts the alternator down close to the lower radiator hose, etc.

So, did your engine with the alternator position and wide belt pulleys shown in the photo fit into the Tiger engine compartment? Your picture of engine in car did not have a shot of the alternator. Just wondering, Cliff
