Trying to put together a positive battery cable for my MK1, and I've researched all the usual places. But, not much detail. One post said the cable is about 11 1/2 feet long. There is no mention of the gauge of cable or specific type, There is some info about cables for rear mounted batteries in general. Some mention of 01 gauge and disagreement regarding using welding cable vs regular battery cable. So. any comments about,

length
size (gauge)
color
Type (automotive vs welding)
Any other suggestions?

Battery Cable

Hi Cliff,

I will check and see if I can find an original one for you...if you are interested.

Best check with a auto electrician. Let him know the battery has to supply a V8 starter and is in the boot. I have found arc welding cables have many smaller wires in their construction and designed to carry huge amps. Also allow a bit longer than origional. My Mk1 had a very worn origional with burn marks and could not stretch from the solenoid to the battery without straining around corners, not good.

Merry Xmas from down under, where it is summer and very hot

Go Bad

On boats you'd be amazed how a long cable can have corrosion under its complete vinyl covering. If you are not in a hurry I can measure for you . They are black in color and not red like you'd think they should be. I have a car with the cable exposed stem to stern and if you need an exact measurement I'd have to do the string method.

I made my own custom cable out of 1 gauge wire and length is right at 11 1/2 feet long, you can get all materials at Oriellys or Napa
