Black Vinyl on floor / tunnel?

Just curious what y'all are using there?

On hump near seat rails / tranny and under the glovebox console.

Not pleased with what I've found hunting fabric stores just yet. All have backing or pile of some sort. Also noticed the tan material tigerracer used on previous MKI post had a significant white 'fluff' backing. Rather stay thinner / no backing, as per original.

Also not quite the same material as some of the interior trim panels...

Thanks,

ProPrep uses a very thin vinyl with no backing. Rick can probubly get it for you is he doesn't already carry it.

On one factory original MKI I looked at, it had thin cardboard wrapped over the drive tunnel with a piece of vinyl laid on top of that. The vinyl matched the seat pattern.

FWIW as this is MKIA early

There are many types of vinyl material throughout. Unfortunately, because car restoration is a whole new thing for me, I've learned to be more communicative along the way... But... When I had the car media blasted, I failed to remove a number of these pieces AND failed to explain precisely (enough anyway) where I did and did not wish blasting to occur. Hence, I lost a number of original floor trimmings, some of the wool thatch insulation stuff and the hatch pattern asbestos (probably) floor insulation for the rear deck that I had intended to keep in place as original... Ah well. Gone now. So, I'm trying to find matches... precise matches.

Should take a ledger of the different vinyls, but off the top of my head...

Floor:
- Console tunnel (glue) / over tranny (cardboard and glued)
- Seat frame ridge (direct glue)
Trim:
- Rear ("B" pillar) of door opening on seam (cardboard and glued)
- Leg side panel / Under dash ("A" pillar) (cardboard and glued)
Dash Pad:
- Yes, the new grain doesn't match. (but looks good 'enough')
Under dash:
- Directly under dash pad at lip (covers aluminum panel L/R)
Trunk (Boot):
- Floor (ply)
- Screen between rear seat soft top storage and trunk.
Door inner panel:
- Couple pieces of vinyl and gaffer tape, over the moisture barrier sheet.
- same tape also used under dash, between vinyl covered panel and cardboard stock like center piece.

The piping and extra vinyl included with some carpets sets is very good, to match some of the above pieces. Some...

Rick doesn't have nonbacked, but has some nice vinyl. Also he pestered me that no one else has bugged him about that for years... and that the tool to remove backing costs multi thousands of dollars. Probably not the best investment...

I see a number of potential sources UK and haven't tried a local upholsterer just yet. Trying the online forum shortcut...

Its fun to be OCD sometimes... (as in... Oh, Crap Derek...g.m.a.b.)

Yeah, mine's got this. If you need a pic...... or of anything else for that matter....

;-)

Seriously though, if you get the itch... close-up of grain... and if you've access... a picture of the vinyl backing anywhere it has lifted from the cardboard.

Pretty sure I have it, from door pieces. But curious if any differences.

Frankly, I've altered the flooring insulation, so I can never be "correct" again. But, my position has been, when possible, make the appearance correct.

Thanks for your help,

Derek

Ok, I've taken a few pics and hopefully they help a little.

The back of the vinyl that goes at the side, next to your legs under the dash.
This is the original vinyl on new board as the old board was like a dog's back leg. Still got it somewhere if you want to be pedantic.

Back of trim piece that curves over the rear inner wheel arch.

Three pieces of vinyl for comparison.
Left is the piece that curves over the rear inner wheel arch, middle is door card and right is card that goes next to your legs.

HTH.

vinyl

does the back of the material look the same for cars with the longhorn vinyl instead of the pebble grain? if anyone wants to see what original furflex and carpets look like I could send photos since I have both items still in the rootes packages.
