BON ..

Boo!

No bids yet...Norm's picture is scarying off potential bidders:D

Sold via "buy it now". $3500. Another appears to be available. (NA)

It would appear that it's the same book as the original auction now reads... "This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available."...

and now re's relisted it with

..."I want to apologize to the first bidder, and the person who asked me a question, for modifying the ad, but I had intended to set it up as you see it now. I called Ebay to get help, so the ad is now the way I intended "...

The 'description' appears the same also...

I see he's also throwing in free USPS shipping !!

I'll be honest and say that the prices these books are going for is starting to piss me off.

Here we have a book that all Tiger owners would like to have as a reference because that is precisely what it was intended to be, but most can't afford the frankly ludicrous amounts of money demanded for it....and it is demanded because of the reserves set.

If it was a 1st edition of a book and you could choose to buy the paperback instead, then ok, but there shouldn't be a cost barrier between us and the information enclosed.

I can't speak for Norm but I can't imagine that this is the situation he intended with it's publication.....or George Fallehy for that matter.

Time for a CD imo.

I'm the wrong side of the pond Warren. :)

I have borrowed a copy in the past but it would be ace to have the info to hand.

Back in the day a person could buy the car, and enjoy it, rather than just ogling over a book about it for the amount required for "buy it now".

I can't see paying that much for any book either but we'll have to hope that whoever makes the deal is a happy Tiger owner.

Norm should be the one to be upset. I may be incorrect in this but I believe he had difficulties making a go of the original book. So much so that he may have shied away from a second venture but now may be the time to reconsider (hint, hint) as there is definitely a group interested in buying so sales would be brisk (hint, hint) would be easier to do with on-line publishing and print on demand (hint, hint) and its time for an update (hint, hint). Just as long as he doesn't get too greedy with the asking price (hint, hint) from seeing current prices.

It is not just the book that is untouchable. An air cleaner just sold over $1000 on ebay. Owning a tiger 30 years ago was never a rich person's hobby. It is becoming one and regular guys with Tiger's cannot compete with people willing to pay anything for a part or book. Lee

BTW: The book is relisted again and it includes "FREE SHIPPING" too!!!

Glad I got an alarm for the house. I could afford to replace the TV, the stereo, the antique bikes... but not the BON.

ha ha

Would be what insurance companies would say after they paid with replacement cost can be limited to 4X the cost when new.

Unless you had a scheduled all risk floater..

Typical advice on Calif. Policies by Farmers and other big players.

BON

i wonder if it would be covered by the addition to a hagerty policy that covers spare parts?

Something to consider when discussing reprinting the BON- the publisher went out of business and the printing plates were destroyed- not incidental to the discussion.

Oh Dear.

Back in the day, I bought 5 copies of 'BON' from Rick Mcleod! I recall him telling me nobody wanted them and that he would be 'stuck' with them for years to come!.how time changes all that?...
Here's what happened to my books..1st was sent to the Editor of Classic and Sports Car Magazine as a loan for a review..despite many requests it was not returned. 2nd sold to a club member who's cheque 'bounced'!. 3rd lent to a club member and never returned.4th middle section was printed upside down and returned to Mcleod...im now informed that these faulty books are worth even more than a standard book!! 5th I still have ..Hooray.
Now does anybody want to ask me about my girlfriends over the years ?

Ps..Graham Roods Book 'The works Tigers' is a similar story..get one now?

Around 1994 or 1995, I called Rick Mcleod and asked what is this "Book of Norman" that was listed in his catalog and was it worth the $55 (I think that is what it cost). Rick said it was high priced for what it was and he didn't push the book at all. As a result, I bought Mike Lawence's Tiger book from Rick which he recommended as a better book on the Tiger!

If Norm wanted to, he could produce another edition of his book without the original printing plates. Book publishing has advanced with technology and using a copy of his book any publisher could reproduce it without any trouble.

Norm owns the IP on the book, he may not own the copyright.. which means he may not be able to reproduce it. Secondly I seem to recall he wasn't interested in re-issuing the old version again and was working on a second edition.

If you didn't buy it back then, that's unfortunate. I got into Sunbeams around 1994, when dad bought his SIVGT, I wasn't even aware of Sunbeam Specialties till early 2000 and at the time was focused on my SII Alpine. I'm not even sure if Rock had copies of the book by then. It would be nice to have a copy, but the club has one we can borrow, so the access to the info is there.

Norm helps the Tiger community out a lot, he doesn't owe any of us a reproduction of the book, and given it was a slow seller and he probably made squat out of it.. and now others are making so much.. i can see that he would be even less inspired to re-issue it. Lesson.. when a book comes out.. buy it when you can.

As for the current prices , I'm not so sure they are are to be believed.. i suspect there is some insider trading on these and people are selling back and forth to push the price up massively before actually selling them.. how did it go from a slow progression of $400 to around $1K over maybe 8 years to suddenly 3.5k in about a year... doesn't stack up... If people are actually buying the book for that they would want to have absolutely perfect beyond comprehension Tigers with absolutely every part they want on it before they prioritise that book for that money...

my .02 ...

Michael,

The Tiger market is changing ...as the population of good cars diminishes
that pushes up the prices and it's not uncommon for a good restoration to cost
upwards of a hundred grand US $$. Norm's book is unique and no longer published so the market has decided what the going rate will be and it will continue to rise...$2500 is small peanuts when you are plunking down big bucks on a restoration and you want all the bells and whistles. In the Cobra world Peter Brock published a book "Daytona Cobra Coupes" which is out of print and very rare. I bought one back in 2000 for $500 and it's now worth
fifteen times that amount and Pete will never republish the book. Be thankful
that the Tiger has finally started to get the recognition that it deserves in the
collector market.

Book of Worm?

So says Dude 234!! ..sorry old boy ..I dont think so ...even if you scanned this book at the highest resolution ,the results would be dreadful .

So best wait for the follow up !..."1066.Normans invasion?"

His current Book is subject to basic Economics ..The Law of Supply and Demand ....Just like the Sunbeam Tiger..and will continue to rise in price ...Cheers D.
