The Braille Institute at Melrose and Vermont Rallye was yesterday July 28th. The 50 drivers and and navigators had challenging, urban surface street only route to follow all the was to Huntington Beach and lunch. TigerBlue was the only Sunbeam this year.
What? The Rallye instructions are in "Braille" or very large print for the blind and sight impared students of the Institute. This provides the students opportunity to practice their skills outside the classrooms and their homes.
Why? Although these kids will never have the sight to drive themselves the Rallye lets them team with another person to complete new tasks and compete with the other students.
I was paired with 17 year old Aidee. She was experienced in this competition and had an overall win in a previous event. No surprise we were 2nd in class (Braille Readers) and 6th overall of the 50 participants.
The CHP had 10 entrys and the event raised a couple thou for the Institute as well. Anyone can enter and it the instructions are relatively straight forward in the past but simplifyed this year. Thanks go to the MG club L.B. for providing the checkpoints, timing and scoring. Pictures soon
