brand of bolts

I'm cleaning up a box of old sunbeam bolts and I discovered that there are 4 different makes of the 1/4-28 bolts- Frazer, Sparts, Wiley and Auto.

I'm pretty sure the Auto brand was used on my later tiger so the others must have come from a series 4 alpine and a mk1a tiger but both cars were in boxes when I bought them.

Anyone have any idea how/when these were used on sunbeams?

thanks
Bob

Loose screws

I asked one of my Brit restorer pals and he told me that these are available from Moss. These are similar to ones in many locations on Sunbeams.
Yeah it's not a bolt , but after a pal asked me for the right out in front hardtop similar screws I started looking about.

Not Phillips?

I forgot the name of the Brit Phillips like heads and my VV isn't Vorking on my laptop . I do not have a Spanish accent :)

screws

Hi Warren, I was saying that most of the screws on sunbeam are Pozidriv, not Phillips.

I always thought that the 4 radial hashmarks indicated a brand of screw not the type of drive.

Even if I was really careful the Phillips screwdriver would want to cam out even if the original screw was in good shape and the threads weren't that rusty.

That's also why the hinge bolts are such a pain to remove. They require a really fat Pozidriv driver that no one has.

Pozidriv is still used on things like furniture hinges and wood screws. It's also used on a lot of Ikea stuff. People think that the fasteners are really crap but they are using Phillips screwdrivers on Pozi screws.

Pozi screwdrivers aren't hard to find but they don't work on Phillips screws so mostly just the furniture people use them.

Thanks for posting this! Certainly something I didn't know, and saved me some grief while taking apart my hardtop.

Original Question

Bob

I have also been searching for original bolts. Did you get any more information on your original question about how the different brands of bolts were used on different models?

I have also hound a brand “GKN” which were in the bin of bolts taken off my Tiger when it was restored 20 years ago. Any info on that brand?

bolts

Hi Jim, I did get more info on my bolt question, I should have posted it.
An expert I know sent me this:

My feeling on the bolt head issue is that (as you mentioned) Auto S are certainly the most commonly found bolt on the Tiger. Some Auto R's are mixed in there as well along with these others. Here is a list below that are on my MKII:

Auto S--trunk hinge spring plate-most common on Tiger
Auto R--Steering column & other longer length N.F. bolts
Rubery Owen S50-60--hood latch, bracket for trunk latch
Sparts S --hood hinge
Wiley S--hood latch at heater core (and Auto S's)
W W R S--hood hinge
SN-MW S--hood hinge, trunk latch
S-trunk mounted bracket for latch

I can't say with authority that the above is totally correct, only that not much of this Tiger has been apart. Some will say this bolt or that one isn't correct, but often it is a matter of their exposure.

Also, at times you will find a mix of brands on one bracket such as 2 Auto S and 1 Wiley holding down the hood latch above the heater core.

Alpine and Tiger bolts aren't necessarily the same for a particular location. For the most part, by the time parts were being bolted on the unibodys, the Alpine and Tiger were being built at two different locations.

'bracket by tanks' are 5/16" to tank, but nuts are out-nut has a ring on the face

I don't remember ever seeing a Frazer brand.

In conclusion, I believe Auto S & R's, Sparts S Wiley S, and Rubery Owen are the most common. One has to consider that on the assembly line if a bolt bin became empty for say for hood latches, they surely would move to another bolt brand to keep it rolling rather than shutting the line down.

Bolt Heads

When I owned my last Pantera, I heard that the concourse restorations were becoming so perfect, that some owners were aligning the flats of the bolts on the valve covers to gain an advantage over their competitors. I wonder if it will ever come to that with Tigers. Thanks, Bob! LOL.

That's kind of interesting. Does Concourse mean a perfect build, or the way it came from the factory?
I always thought that it was Factory Correct more than perfect.
I would think that lining up the flats of the bolts would not be Concourse, and therefore be points deductible.
just MY observation.

Actually, after studying it, I guess I'm really wrong about that. Never mind.:(

Jim,

I think your comments may well be valid. I sold that Pantera in the 90s and I don't recall 'concourse' necessarily meaning as it 'came from the factory' back then, as opposed to today, where at times even 'original patina' can be more desirable than 'restored'.

Good stuff

Sharing those trade secrets. I had hoped to compare bolts on a 80 plus percent original paint car but looks like no meeting again. Over restored is certainly a topic to be considered.

Loose screws

I have a few, ;) and I thought everybody would like a look at a couple of them.
Here are the screws holding down the hood latch and access to the heater core.
