Bumper and bracket questions

I'm getting my bumpers re-chromed tomorrow. These have not been on the car in a long time, and I have 4 sets which I have gathered over the years. Here are the questions.

I have 2 different types of bumperettes (bumper guard) Some mount to the bracket with a plate welded into the inside of the bumperette and threaded so the bolt goes through the bracket and threads into the bumperette. The others have a squared off opening in the face of the bumperette (under the rubber cover) so the bolt goes through the bumperette and the washer and nut are on the bracket side. Is this a front/back set, or different years? If front/back, then which is front?

The rear brackets all seam to have a slightly different curve where they mount to the body, along with a slight twist. Should that be at a 90 degree bend or something slightly less?

How do the metal clips holding on the rubber guards come off?

Any help appreciated.

Matt there were 2 types of bumperette. There are ones with a captive nut which are earlier production iirc and the one where they poke through the face which was later. Rootes changed the back of the rubber buffers to have a recess to accept the bolt head. I think the repro rubbers are the later style so they work for both. On the actual over riders be careful Rootes used them on many models and the profile of the cutout is different for the bumpers of different models. The alpine/tiger ones are same fromt and back as with the actual bumper bar just the mounting irons are different.

the clips holding the rubber stick thru the over rider and bend over inside. use a screw driver and straighten them out and the rubber lifts off. remember that the clips are molded into the rubber.

I had some rubbers with the metal prong that bends over. These were a shorter metal prong and on the back a clip locked the prong in. They appear to be what sunbeam specialties sells. I just needed to clean them up more and put on my glasses to see how they worked. Thanks for the response.

The over-riders all appear to have the same profile and all fit the same over the bumpers, but thanks for the heads up. I could see no reason not to interchange the over-riders, knowing that the rubber will fit on either type. I would like to keep them on the original car as I have both an early mkI and a later mkIa.

I think you are correct that the ones with the threaded plate welded inside are from the earlier car, as I think the bumper I took off the later car had the other style.

Thanks again. I'm off to Vernes chrome tomorrow.

Where are you located? Who are you using for chrome? Just curious. I have some stuff at Van Nuys plating right now, but boy! Have they gone up since I last had some stuff chromed.

What are the bumpers costing now, overrides? You can PM me if you don't want to post it.

Thanks,
Paul

I had my complete rear bumper chromed last year here in Arizona. Total cost was about $650.

Im in for $1800 for 4 bumpers with 8 over-riders. Including some straightening. I cleaned them good before taking them in. I will pick up so no shipping costs, except my time and gas. They said 2-3weeks, but I would be OK with 4. I gave cash deposit and will pay in full with cash. verneschrome in South LA. I wouldn't go there after dark!
