Can valve stem seals be changed in car?

Hi,
I need to change my valve stem seals, any way to change them in the car?
I'm thinking I may be able to get to the eight on the pass side, but I can't see how I could get a spring compressor on the back springs on the drivers side?

Cheers,

Paul

I just don't see it happening on the #4 and 8 cylinders. Just pull the heads and have them freshened up.

Many eons ago, we did one by pulling the fan & motor mounts to gently lower the engine just enough to get in there. Still a long weekend's headache . . . . .

Symptoms

I am guessing you have symptoms of bad stem seals? A puff of smoke on starting? oil consumption?

Before taking that job on consider it might be something else. How long has it been since new or last rebuild and just me being me might add a quart and drive on?

PS If you try it make sure the piston in the hole you are working on is TDC before removing that valve keeper. Done it (changed broken valve spring at the track once to facilitate driving home.) Was not 4 or 8 either.

Thanks guys, I figured I wouldn't be able to get to all 16 with the engine in the car...
Can you pull the intake and heads without pulling the motor?

Cheers,

Paul

yes, but...

...it's a pain in the back! I took my intake and heads off with the motor in the car, without dropping the engine, then re-installed the same way. I was 25 years younger when I did this, and don't know if I would do it again.

YES! Just have to have the rear most head bolts in their holes in the head as you place them. As there is no room to drop them in with head in place. Now torqueing down said bolts is fun ;)

What is

This winter thing:)

But really I hear what they are saying it is seemed really hard just getting the Tiger alloy valve covers on laying across the motor with a big heavy blanket on it, now that's cozying up with the kitty.

I torched the pass side head a race in FL and i pulled the head off had it resurfaced that night and the next morning got it back on and made first round and actually won my class.
But not any more, just pull the motor and have the heads redone would hate to see you go through all that work and it is something else.

Proof!

I pulled the heads for a valve job in the car. It can be done.
Hardest thing was to get the rearmost valve cover bolt.
On reinstall I got a longer bolt and added a tubular spacer so I was able to get on the bolt head with a short socket. You almost cannot see the modification.
