Cat Box, Boom Box that is

How about some input on your radio installations? I was beating together this AM FM Motorola out of my parts cars thinking I could live with AM talk radio and an occasional FM tune.

Now that my car is more sorted and I am more comfortable knowing that that rattle and quirk of the car is not anything serious I am ready to make them go away with some tunes.

After looking at customautosound.com products and the posting by toytrainguy in the dashboard thread with the remote control and head unit hidden in trunk I am ready to get something going. Still a work in progress with the metal tissue box speaker casing, "backing was rotted fiberboard" pic. I know it is not a LAT but period correct in picture below.

Thanks, W

Break out the table saw and scroll saw and make your own box. I made this for my car in the early 90s and stained it to match the dash. The picture is crappy but it does match the dash. I added gauge holes for a more accurate water temp. I designed mine like the original radio box and mounted it using the bolts that hold the crossbar together from the firewall to the dashboard.

Not about Horsepower

Thanks for the reply, anyone else?

I am looking to see the either period correct looking simulated AM knob radio mode like Custom Auto Sound sells or an alternative to their Hidden Audio style of which they have two a swing down LCD under dash and a remote handheld unit.

My preference is to go completely as hidden as possible. Toytrain guy opened my eyes to a great idea with his trunk mounted standard dash unit mated to a RF remote in the custom dashboard thread. I have seen several DIY at our autocross but nothing as nice as what he suggested.

I would venture to guess what seems contrary to popular opinion on this forum horsepower and torque win races but a song like "Can't drive 55" by Van Halen makes it more fun to getting your foot into it, and I would argue that good tunes help a sports car go fast.

Here's a link to what I'm using in my car...
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_7923_Maxxsonics-MM-1.html

Unfortunately, it's not made anymore and I can't seem to find anything similar...
I have the piece with the volume control bolted to the side of the console for easy access... it will take input from basically anything with a headphone out jack... Ipod, MP3 player, phone etc.
It's made as a pass through from a car stereo using rca outs but I just don't bother with anything on those inputs. I output to a small amp ( all this is under the seat) which drives 2 speakers that are in my radio console surround. I took off the cardboard piece and remade it in aluminum so there are 2 5" speakers in there pointing at the footwells. I also used the second rca outs to power a rear amp that is in the trunk...there were already 2 speaker holes in my back panel so I mounted some 6.5" in there.

So... you turn on a playlist on your player... and drive... not exactly hands-free' but you can at least adjust the volume while driving...

I'll get a pic this weekend, but a friend with an Alpine has a period correct looking radio, but, you flip the face down and it plays cd's, plug in your ipod or put a memory stick in with music on it.
