So the wife and I travel to Ireland last week to attend the wedding of a family friend. We decided to make a full week of it and do some touring before the event. After landing in Dublin, we picked up our rental car and headed for Galway.
The next day, it was off to see the Cliffs of Moher. After the obligatory photos and walking up and down the trails with a couple thousand of our fellow beings, we decided to take the coastal route (Wild Atlantic Way) back to Galway. This route brings you through some very barren coastal landscapes that seem almost other-worldly but breathtaking, nonetheless. While trying to focus on avoiding collisions with on-coming cars while not sideswiping immovable objects, I was thinking about how great it would be to see a Sunbeam--of any type--on the road during our visit.
After about 100 or so kilometers we approached the first pull-over where you can park your car, get out, walk around and take some snaps. After parking, I got out of the car (right-side, of course) and looked forward several cars in front of us. Lo and behold, there's the unmistakable right rear fin of an Alpine. Imagine that! What are the chances? Mission accomplished in the first afternoon of driving. Wow!
Turns out, it was a Tiger without the SS side trim and the owner was from France. He was touring Ireland with four other French colleagues in their vintage cars (Mercedes, Jaguar, ???). Sadly, their English wasn't any better than my French so we were limited to gestures and smiles and--somehow--a sense of camaraderie about Tigers across cultures.
I thought this would be the highlight of my trip and it was until we pulled up to Markree Castle in County Sligo for the wedding on Wednesday. That's a whole other story...
