Clutch Master Cylinder Seating.

I know you guys love tech questions so here's another one for you.

I'm currently (aswell as a dozen other jobs) refitting the clutch master cylinder.
Where it seats, it overlaps slightly the tiger transmission tunnel.
The transmission tunnel is not level with the rest of the bulkhead....

..so when the cylinder is fitted, it sits on both....

This means that when the cylinder is tightened down, it is leaning to one side and is not sat on the same plane as the travel of the clutch pedal....

In the bigger scheme of things it's not a real biggy but I can get a bit obsessive about things like this because it's not correct and it must have a small impact of the operation/longivity/reliability of the cylinder.

So, I have options.

1) Leave it as is,
2) Stick a couple of 1 millimetre washers on the bolts between it and the bulkhead or
3) Make a 1 millimetre shim in the shape of the shaded area..

...to level it out.

We know that when built they wouldn't have been too concerned about this due to cost, development, expected life of vehicle etc but this is where I find myself so I can do something about it.

Does anyone else's car have this issue?

Thoughts please.

RHD History

Ya gotta luv em' as they were/are . A fine shim makes practical sense. RHD did not have the re-enforcing plate I noticed? Also, your photos show the miracles of gas-less wire welding in spades. It looks like wounded chewing gum stuck on randomly . . . .;)

The welding's shocking isn't it.

I do like the idea of a shim because it gives me something to make.

Are the reinforcing plates you speak of the U shaped plates on the other side of the cylinder holes?

Do you guys get this same problem with your brake cylinder?

there are plates on both inner & outer firewall

No, we never got those. Just the inner ones.

You guys are brought up on steak so perhaps they figured they needed a bit more reinforcement. :)

Incase anyone is interested, I made this...

...and put it in there...

...and it now looks like this...

...sitting snugly next to it's friend but not touching it like it used to...

The bulkhead is a bit all over the place like I imagine most are so I had to make the shim 1.5 millimetres at the top running to 2 millimetres at the bottom and slightly thinning from left to right to put the clutch cylinder in the same plane horizontally and longitudinally as the brake cylinder which I used as a datum.

Hopefully moving the clutch cylinder forwards 2 millimetres won't have any effect on the clutch's operation otherwise it's back to the old drawing board.

Just got to get some longer bolts and some nylocs now....and put the throttle bracket and linkage on ofcourse. I don't think you guys have those.

wow...getting S done...

wish I could lately.

And, worst case, can't you just remove 2mm-ish off the inner plate to compensate for distance should you find any difference?

Nice work!

Yeah, that had crossed my mind but with the spacer being an original part, the other club members would make me sit on the naughty. :)
