Does this look NORMAL?

I recently had an issue with my master brake cylinder creating the need for me to refinish an area in the engine bay and firewall. As I was sanding away in this very tight area I noticed what is pictured and I don't think this is factory finish work. It appears to be an L shaped tear in the metal that starts at the end of a firewall weld which sits kind of below the steering shaft. My question: Is this common, critical, normal, should it be welded up if it is indead an issue? Or should I just finish the paint work and button it up? It's an extremely tight area to weld but, I've got the steering out, and master brake cylinder out, just dont want to drop the engine to get this done....If there is something to do...Advise greatly appreciated.

Have you got another picture to show where it is in the engine bay?
I can't quite figure out its position.

I would assume it is not normal but what defines normal Jensen "workmanship" is in itself difficult to define.

Here's perhaps a better picture, the apparent rip is right below the duck bill drain if yours is in place, drivers side. The steering is out of the car, the foil you see is the clutch hydralic line covered while painting. Thanks for you interest in my issue...I'm sure it's not normal but want opinions and feedback on this..Cheers!

It really is difficult to see what has happened.

I can only assume that the weld has failed or it wasn't that great in the first place and then fatigue has created a tear.

You could always ease it back into place and re-weld it or leave it for originality.

It would be interesting to hear whether anyone like Randy has seen it before.

I hope to get more feed back on this as someone out there has had to have been confronted by something similar. I'd hate to leave it as is and then have it continue to tear, if I was convinced it would stay put I'd finish the painting and get the car back on the road.

Personally, I'd be welding it.

If that isn't practical right now you could always drill the end of the tear with a small drill to stop it going anywhere.

I think I'm leaning towards the weld, given I can get someone that will be able to work in this tight spot

I would hate to think that the "factory" would let cars go out like that--I think you may have had some fatigue there....weld it, that's easy and would make me feel better if it were mine.

Tear It Up

Yup: It's a fatigue tear. We would peel back the carpet and weld from the inside. Amen ya'all . . . . .
