Grille "Eyebrow" Needed

Sunbeam Specialities has not had stock for quite a while. The ebay offer looks good, wonder what it will go for.

It takes a bit of effort and skill to remove the dings and bends on a second hand eyebrow and get them smooth enough for a good chrome job... Which is not cheap either.

i have had several eyebrows repaired and triple plated in the last few years. the cost was $135.00 each. this included repairing a few dents. the original is much easier to install than the stainless replacements.

The stainless repros and the last of the brass/chrome repros were terrible with shrink/stretch kinks showing in the smaller side arches. The art of working with metal is a waning industry . . . . . . .I would rather have my high end chrome guy fix the originals.

I have one that needs some work. PM ma and I can send you some pictures after I dig it out.

randy,
I use LaBrandi's in Middletown,PA. the owner is a car guy and his shop has done a lot of work on award winning AACA cars plus cars that have won at various concourse events around the U.S. Tiger Tom told me about them and I've always said that if they can make him happy I'm ok with using them. what I like is they have a set of books like parts houses used to use prior to computers and when you take a part to them they have all the facts and figures for what you brought in. cost to finish depends on what has to be done. they also have a fab shop so they can do some complicated repairs even to pot metal. they have plated 6 sets of the lower wing window pieces for me and there is no evidence of the common pits. with my stock of parts I have been able to take them fairly good pieces so cost is lower. the Harrington we're working on was one of Ian Spencer's cars so all the parts were very good. cost to R&R a bumper was $400.00, overiders $115.00 each, original bolts $10.00 each, $300.00 for the top drip rails. the eyebrow must have been decent but I'm still waiting on cost to polish the Harrington egg crate grill. won't know until they're done since it is many pieces. good work is worth the cost.

Our high end chrome guy is in Holyoke, Mass. Super fussy crew and very clean & tidy shop. You've more than likely seen their work on the grass and on TV. Not cheap by any means, but 100 percent quality and backup. It was quite an education to see how they remove the "dead" metal and build with copper. A combination of hand & machine shaping follows to get a perfect surface before the pretty shiny stuff happens. We also have a couple of driver quality guys for budget assistance who do very good work as well. The EPA hates these guys with a passion . . . . .

the problem we face in the future is that the EPA likes nobody. especially shops doing this type of work. good shops survive, bad one are going away. when I was restoring the 69GT I took them a complete NOS bumper set. they stripped off the original plating and found rough metal under it. they hand worked a lot of places and copper coated before triple plating and really nice. there are places closer but I drive the 450 miles to drop off and discuss what is to be done.

Eyebrow

The one we have isn't bad by any means, and the car is not a trailer queen. We removed all trim prior to sending it off to the paint shop and were looking to brighten that part before installing it after the paint job. This is a nice, solid, straight rust free Mk lA going a slightly "redder" tint than Carnival Red. I may have my stainless guy remove the dings and decide on whether to plate it or not. I will try Classic Sunbeam to see if they have one. I will let you all know what happens, just hoping someone stashed away a really nice one they didn't need.

The original part is chrome plated brass. Beware that ding removal may expose the brass.

One guess how I figured that out. :(
