I feel it is a good, basic article, meant to take out the fear of doing the work. I suppose that he could have looked at the plug color as well to determine jetting. I'm lazy and let my neighbor build my big carbs. I only use the spray can cleaner method on already clean small motor carbs. The bigger and dirtier ones need the parts dip. All I'd add it either learn to close your eyes when spraying the carb cleaner or wear glasses and cruddy clothes. A lot of passages look open but aren't. Then be prepared for " you stink like the garage," or what's that aftershave you're wearing...

Other Carb Cleaners
There was a discussion on another site about using an Ultrasonic cleaner for carbs [Webers, in their case]. Those who had/were using them claimed that the U/S was able to clean out all internal passages better than anything else. Also, depending on what type of cleaner you added to the water, it would give the body a “like new” or almost Plated looking finish. The pics I’ve seen look great. I found one that looks like it is large enough for the carb body, stripped down. Its made of Stainless, includes heater & timer. Anyone familiar with these? This is going on my latest to-buy list.

Sounds Like a Great Idea
Using an ultrasound cleaner sounds like a great idea. Many of us have small units for cleaning jewelry.
Those might be big enough for parts off the carb, but not the body itself. (Just don't tell the wife what you are cleaning in it.) Were they using a water-based cleaner or a carb solvent?

A few posters mentioned a variety of cleaners used depending on the outcome you wanted, appearance, etc. Straight water could be used, but adding a solvent or carb cleaner improved the result. All reported positive results, but I would need to revisit that thread to see what cleaners were used.
There are some listed on eBay in a variety of sizes & that are reasonably priced [made in China, of course] & have at least one model that seems to be large enough for most carb bodies. This is not a small item. The size of the unit is listed a 22” x 13” x 12-1/2”. The actual tank size is 20” x 12” x 8” with a 500W heater. This is the largest one they show & it is listed as a “30L” for about $250. The only other one I found as a competitor appeared to be a more Industrial looking thing for $800. I would be skeptical, of course, but there have been many sold since I first looked at these & scanning through the reviews from verified buyers, these seem to be well made, reliable & actually work as advertised.
They appear to be sold via several business names, all located in Ontario, Cal. No point to driving to Ontario, since shipping is free, although in Cal we will be charged tax. I may contact one of these vendors to see if they would be interested in a cash offer. It may be 2-3 weeks before I have mine. I will have a few cabs to do this year, but mostly this will take up a lot of space. Anyone local who has a carb or something similar to clean will be welcome to bring it.
