Hi, can someone tell me what the proper size of the hardtop wing window button (bolts to the opening clamp through the rear triangular window) should be for a circa 1967 hardtop?

I have 2 sizes of buttons, one is about .585 in diameter and the bigger one is a little over 1" in diameter.

On the late model hardtop were 2 sizes used?

thanks

2 sizes used.. Smaller were earlier larger from sic onwards. The theory being they wouldn't craze the perspex if they were larger.... They were wrong!

Hi Michael, so did the later style top remain unchanged throughout it's run with the exception of increasing the size of the buttons?

I'm going to replace the side windows with glass, maybe I should go with the bigger ones.

Does anyone know if the bigger button was ever reproduced? If not I'll make a couple on my lathe out of brass and have them plated.

Bob,

I have 1 large button and I need 2. I would be happy to send this one to you as a pattern to have a chance to buy one.

The mk1a hardtops have a pair of angle brackets riveted on the rear wall. They provide a place for the hooks on the soft top cover support rubber straps. Early tops for the mk1 do not have that bracket.

Smitty and I made a bunch of those bracket so I could convert an early top to late.

I kept two brackets and left the rest at Smitty's

As mentioned the soft top cover brackets were added. Therer was also a change in the rubbers that seal against the body where they went from a closed cell to a softer seal with slightly different profile ( I think in that order) I recall this was to try and limit paint damage from friction...again...didn't work.

hardtop brackets

Hi Erich and Michael, I have 3 tops that I want to restore and they all have those little el brackets that have been mentioned.

I've never done anything with these tops so expect more questions.

Erich, I have 4 of the big buttons and 2 of the little ones but I'll still probably forge ahead and make a couple of the bigger ones. The round top will take a little freehand work but it's a pretty simple part.

If I go ahead and make them and they turn out ok you can have one.

Are the rubbers for the buttons OK? The larger ones gotvteroped down here a few years back and the molded rubber grommets... I have some somewhere in my parts stash if you want pictures.

Nope, I thought I would have to fashion the rubber bit.

I'd assume that they would have to be a 3d sort of rubber washer so it would protect the window on the two surfaces.

If you can recall who made them let me know, thanks.
