Tom Sakai was awarded the Rolex Excellence Trophy yesterday at this year's Rolex Reunion in Monterey for the race group that includes Cobras, Stingrays and GT350s, XKEs and various others.

Tom's Tiger almost missed the last day of racing due to loosing a number of teeth off the ring and pinion gears in his rear end. Dan Walters and Tom removed it Friday evening and took it to Tom Hall's home nearly 2 hours away.
There Peter Thompson and Tom Hallhandled the repairs. Tom Sakai picked it up the next afternoon and it went back in that night, with Dan doing the majority of the work (while Tom made a "short" appearance at Al and Marcia Denson's party).

What about the other Tiger

John Morton was involved in a serious accident Saturday at Mazda Speedway driving the Lance Reventlow Scarab. He was shaken but not held in the Hospital after "Morton flipped and side-rolled multiple times, taking many hits on his helmet..."

Buck Trippel of course withdrew the Sports Car Forum Tiger from Sundays race with John not quite fit to drive.

My source the information on the accident: http://presssnoop.com/?p=2962

See the Sonoma Historics post on this Forum for pictures of the Scarab also driven by John at Infinion in June.

I've seen still several pictures of the accident and video of it will eventually make it to the tube.
Since I wrote this, a video has been posted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hidF0Yo_nA
However after I wrote that the video was available it got pulled by person who posted it. The link no longer works.

John was pinned upside down under the car. What was left of the roll bar was bent forward pressing him forward and down into his seat. The back of his shoulders and back of his head were against the ground. His new helmet was ruined. Fluid was pooling around him. He would have been more at ease if he'd known it was coolant. Eventually a door was removed and he got out. He was immediately strapped to a backboard and taken to the local hospital.

To his surprise, John felt physically OK to drive on Sunday morning. We discussed it & he decided to take the day off. Not quite "off" - he did get to repeat his story about a hundred times and still sign autographs before heading back to the hospital for a short follow-up visit.

Tiger owner Steve Sorensen also got banged up Saturday during the Trans Am race.

He thought he was OK but later decided to go to the hospital to get checked out. He'd been examined and had an MRI when the medical team treating him left his room saying they'd be right back.

Steve waited an hour before pressing the call button. When the nurse arrived she asked what was wrong. Steve replied, "You said you'd be right back." The nurse explained that an ambulance brought in another patient & the team was working on him. Steve was soon released.

Any guess who the hospital team was tending to?

Hint: his initials are JM.

25 Photo Sequence By Dean Burnside-Machado

I received an E-mail with five of these pictures so I tracked them down to Dean and his Facebook page. Dean was very gracious and responded positively when I asked if I could share these on the Forum. You can find all 25 on his Facebook page
