I have since cleaned the trunk up, but there is clearish plastic hose that comes up through a hole in the trunk floor and is shown in this pic coming out under the battery tray and going over to the left. What is that for?

Probably the remnants of the original battery vent

Gee... wouldn't it be cool if somebody would repro that for the concours crowd?... hint ;)

Yes, it's that same hose, but what does it attach to in the trunk? Does it just under the battery? Is that in case the battery begins to leak so the water/acid goes onto the ground instead of the trunk floor?

The vent tube is black rubber. My car still had the vent tube and caps when I bought it. First picture shows the original. The second picture is the original tube in my car but with the reproduction Lucas battery and caps. These caps are a little smaller than original. The original caps wouldn't fit on the repro battery.

Try scrubbing that tube with some soap. Mine looked similar to the one in your picture before I cleaned it up.

Yep!

Doug... that looks great!! How did you attach the caps to the hose ??

Just used some screws that had a similar head size to what is on the original cap.

The repro battery is the AGM type so no worries of adding water or leaking like the older repro batteries would do.

Now I just need to change out the clamp on the positive battery terminal.

Fabricating a Vent Tube

Hi All

After getting some input from Doug, I was able to fabricate a battery vent tube that looks pretty close to original.

I already had the reproduction Lucas Battery that is available from Antique Auto Battery (no affiliation). The battery caps already have small holes. I acquired some 3/32 aluminum tubing, cut it in 1" pieces and fitted the pieces through the holes. They fit very snugly.

I then got some 3/8" hose, measured the distance between the tubes protruding from the caps, poked holes in the rubber hose, then snugged the hose onto the tops of the tubes. All fit very snugly but still allow for the caps to be turned so you can take them on and off. I blocked off the battery end of the tube with a plastic cap.

Now I just need to tweak the grommet in the trunk floor to allow the opposite end on the hose to exit the trunk.

I have attached a few photos.

Wrong Size Hose

Hi All

Just in case somebody plans to fabricate one of these vent hoses, for the record, it is a 5/16 hose NOT a 3/8. The 3/8 will fit through the hole in the floor w/o a grommet...but with the grommet installed 5/16 is the proper size. I should have checked that to begin with, but now with the 5/16 hose everything fits properly.

I know this is boring stock stuff, I just did not want to be the cause for somebody to waste time and effort.
