New motor for the old girl...

After 40 years, my neighbor said it was time to do something with my tired motor & volunteered to help. We dropped it out gave the motor to a respected local (two blocks away) engine builder (google, Byron Koury). I could have gone the crate motor route, but I wanted to keep my original block. It also retained the 271hp heads that I put on about 1975 (yes, I know they do not flow very well). I asked for a nice docile responsive street motor & that is what I got. My original dished piston, 200hp 289 now makes the same power / torque as the original 271hp motor that had real fuel, more compression, a solid-lifter cam & it's hp ratings were on the old inflated system.

Engine builders can play with their Dynos to yield higher than actual numbers, but this Dyno is set up very conservatively, & came up with about 274 hp & just over 300 ft/lbs of torque. Valve float was around 5600rpm & the distributors rev-limiter was set at 5400rpm. All tuning was done with the stock air-filter in place, so it will be a drop in & go installation. In today's world, 274 hp isn't a big number but nearly one horsepower per cubic inch is plenty for me.
Changes were Crane hydraulic cam / lifters / roller-rockers. The cam was degreed for better torque & is actually a milder grind than the one that I put in the engine when I was 25 years old. New valves, replaced exhaust seats, .030 over flat top forged pistons, ARP rod bolts, crank polished (no cutting required), Pertronix-3 stock appearing electronic Distributor that eliminated my MSD box. New 600 cfm carb, down from the too large 650 cfm I had on it for 30+ years. Everything was balanced from the new front damper to the Centerforce flywheel & pressure plate. Lots of other upgrades like new amazon hoses for the remote oil filter / cooler system too.

Now, I am just waiting patiently for Bill Martin's 5-spd conversion to be available....

very pretty motor.. and assume the very happy owner standing next to it :D

Those numbers will make it feel very lively.. tigers are not big cars it doesn't take much to make them move, and the torque makes them feel fast on the street.

now all we need is a video of the dyno.. or after you install so we can here your sweet 260 SBF music

I paid about $700 for the Dyno time, they did 19 pulls.

Yes, I had my 35+ year old Sanderson headers coated by JET-HOT. I got an extra layer of coating they offer for an additional $100 that supposedly works even better. Only downside is the extra coating leaves the surface rough. Didn't matter to me as the headers were pretty rough already. I also had some dents in them. I asked the engine builder about the dents affecting performance & he said that compared to the extreme downturn of the pipes coming out of the head (tight quarters of the car), the dents are of no consequence. Really high performance motors have primary tubes that come out of the heads as straight as possible for as long as possible.

OK, I paid about the same. Was wondering if that was the norm. Glad you are running headers as you would have taken a power hit with the manifolds.

Once you get it together, hit a chassis dyno to compare.

Good For You

Glad to see you doing some freshening up and preserving the car for another generation. Hope to see you with it at some upcoing east coast meets. Sounds like you have taken a rational approach to everything.

I spoke to the owner of Sanderson headers last month and she said if someone wanted to let them borrow a set of their headers she would make some sets to keep in stock. Seems that a lot of their patterns were destroyed before she purchased the company.

That is interesting as I too called Sanderson last June & was told "forget it", they couldn't possibly make a new set without the original patterns. I sure wish they would have asked me about using mine BEFORE I spent $450 on them for the Jet-Hot coating. I guess they don't want to bother with obscure cars anymore as they are making enough money on the street-rod crowd now.
I bought mine from "J.C. Jypney" & you might remember, that when you ordered from them you never knew exactly what you were going to get until it got there. I was happy that day in 1973.

Bill,

A fresh motor with a 5-speed, the old girl should be like a teenager...
