Original lic plate holder

Can someone shoot a pic of the rubber mounting whatsit that connects the plate frame to the part that bolts on to the car.

The Tigers utd. does not list the bolts that hold the ass'y on to the car they are not the typical 1/4 20 but something like 1/4 26 or 1/4 28 ? nothing seems to fit well.

I would go without but want to park in a meter spot sometimes and Rita's cousin the ugly meter maid is hunting cars with no front plates, it is a 25 buck fix it ticket too complicated by a stop in at the courthouse as well.
Thanks.

Warren,

Here are a couple of pictures of how mine is attached. The bolts are 1/4-28
there is no rubber grommet between the frame and valance...If you look close
at the behind picture you will see a black bracket that was added for support
for that portion of the valance, without some added support the plate will
probably flap in the wind...

Thanks

Your work is very nice with the Z shaped metal bracket and the other support brackets. Most of the original plates I have seen have a thick rubber Z shaped that is held with two flat head screws with a small postage stamp size threaded metal backing plate.

I have some small rubber extrusions to make the Z shape out of. I bet a lot of plates bit the dust and got crumpled due to the ride height and those pesky speed bumps curbs etc. Maybe the rubber helped provide a little give.

These parts are off a SIV Alpine. The rubber and mount to car was way twisted so we have had reconstructive surgery on the curb with a hammer. I am not sure if there was cross over on the holders.

When I get to my handy neighbors who shares his sheet metal brake with me I'd like to make a larger style plate holder as I have seen nearly the size of the opening for the radiator and have a vinyl lic plate copy made just to give a 10 foot real appearance and so if that speed bump sneaks up on me I won't trash my semi restored plate.

Thanks again for the timely reply

Mine's had the 'curb' adjustment but I thought it looked kinda 'racy' so I left it ! lol :p

My front plates

I thought about posting a picture of our 2 Tiger's front plates but kind of silly as they are on a shelf in the garage. Excuse me for saving time taking the pictures.

Life in the fast lane! or just Hotel California?

I can't really help. BUT, I will say front number plates on classic cars can be a PITA. Can be real detrimental to the lines of the car. Some are just not designed to carry one and then they get painted on the bonnet, which doesn't look that good either.

Sorry for the gripe, but we have to come up with a way of mounting one on the front of mine which will spoil the lines we have made.

My panel man tells me in some states in Au that you can have a lot smaller plate made for the front, which makes sence for classic car owners.

Mal down here we have "slimline plates as an option.. which are useful.. perhaps you can install some black mesh in your new valence opening.. and stencil the plate on in white?

Michael, That sounds like quite a good idea. I will have to look into our options here, if any. I was supprised when I say E-types with the rego number painted on the bonnet, on the front cover of the classic car mag here.
I will have to check with the officials and see if there are any options here in NZ.

Cheers Mal

There were guys with e-types and healets using stickers that looked like the plates on the bonnets and valence of their cars here.. they got in trouble on the ground they were not reflective etc.. that said.. on a classic the authorities seem to worry less as they are enthusiast cars and normally not invloved in anti-social behaviour/bank get aways... :p

The stencil on mesh works well.. i have used it on buildings (not grafiti.. !!!) to mark out services and fire cupboards with a mesh door for ventilation..

think it might look nice on the tiger.

At a recent Shelby club meeting the guest speaker was a Highway Patrol officer.

Somebody asked about missing front plates. He said I love it.

It gives me a clean probable cause to stop you.

Most of the time they will ignore it but if they feel the need to stop you, you have given them the reason they need.

That ship sailed

I love the CHP mantra. All we have to do is turn the car in the parking lot as the car stops and the wheels complain they look anyway. Bad car to drive after 2 or 3 beers.

Lee has a original lic. plate on his car and someday he will take a pic of it.
Should have picked a few parts before I turned him on to the car deal,, ha ha

Having a front number plate was never a great concern here until the introduction of speed cameras.

Dittos

On the red light cameras for the reason for enforcement. Funny but true story, neighbor complained my car had not been moved in 72 hrs "Falcon Conv" happily snuggled in a car cover.

Long story short after they towed me they came back to see if I was moving it and cited the complainants girlfriends car for having a plastic plate cover, and being more than 18" from the curb. Over $200 in ticket for them.

I hear that red light cameras are no longer valid in Calif.

When I get the plate rubber rigged I will post a pic.
