looking for pebble finish vinyl in Scarlet, or a REALLY close approximation
I've talked to both... Martha has no source and Rick said it'd require an order of 1000 running meters... I don't mind dying the bulk stuff for the panels as they aren't wearing surfaces, but dye would never hold up on the seats or console... Scarlet in Pebble grain was the only other color than black that was available on the Mk2 Tiger, and then only on Polar White cars... (all 28 of them!!) Coincidentally, My Mk2 is Polar White...If you haven't already, a phone call to Martha Christenson would be worth it, as would a call to Rick at SS, as he often has things that are not in the catalog. Arctic White wasn't used on the Mk2. The first few Polar White cars were among the last Mk1A's built. Overall, I think, Norm had recorded less than 50 cars in total being Polar White, 28 of which were Mk2's. My car is #463, built late Apr. 1967.How late in production were the 28 Polar White cars? My reason for asking is that I have not run across any Alpines with #108 color code. I've only seen Arctic White (#92) used on Alpines. There may have been some of the late Alpines with Polar White around the time that the MK 2 head light surrounds were used on Alpines. The Polar White ( #108 ) came into regular use and Arctic White was dropped after the production of series Alpines and Tigers ceased and the Alpine fastback production started. There is a difference to the shade of the two white colors. I've had cars of both shades over the years. My 69GT is Polar White. I like the term "pebble grain " much better than the term "pig skin" used by Sunbeam. FYI, the parts manuals show that Tigers and Alpines starting with series 4 had "new red " interiors instead of the scarlet used on earlier cars. I wonder how much difference there was between the two colors of red.
Changes were made on the Alpines and there were Alpines painted Polar White. I've just never run across one. I'll probably make a point now to check VIN plates of late Alpines painted white. The MK1A is based on the series 5 body and looking thru the registry the earliest series 5 Alpine registered with #108 paint was built the week of April 18, 1966 so what was the date that the color change was made on Tigers? My understanding is that it was late in 1966... Norm has said that only late Mk1a's could have been ordered/delivered in Polar White and had 25 documented cars, He also stated that NO Arctic White Mk2 Tigers have been documented, with 32 mk2's documented in Polar White... so I was mistaken when I quoted 28... his assumption is/was that Polar white replaced Arctic White. Martrim in the UK is the usual go to... I did contact them when I was looking for the Azure blue in Pebble grain. They had something close.. The color was a little darker, but the grain was nowhere near as defined... I'll keep looking as I really want to do the trim in red! I may end up doing the seats and console in leather as I can get leather with a pebble finish closer than any samples of vinyl that I have found so far. Then I'll just dye the panels to matchHey Shaun, not surprising that your request for a source of the scarlett vynil got dragged off topic and the how and why...
Anyway...im thinking maybe the UK might ne a better bet.. Lots of rootes cars and ive seen qhta im quite sure is the same grain vynil in imps..
Maybe touch base with @Jeff_H he might have some UK leads
