Rear drum brake adjustment

Drivers side rear drum brake shoes are hanging up. i thought maybe the handbrake was not working correctly. I disconnected the hand brake and removed the drums for inspection. Passenger side drum goes back on easily but drivers side will not go back on. If I force the brake shoes inward the drum goes on but is very difficult to turn. Do I need to use the square peg adjuster on the rear of the wheel to adjust the shoes so the drum will go on or am I missing something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 1/4" square drive at the top of the back plate should take care of your issue. Also make sure the shoes are centered - a little 'percussive' adjustment might help out getting the shoes to seat on the cylinder slots on the bottom and on the adjuster slots on the top. I was just dealing with this myself today too.
Good luck!

Corrosion Headache

On occasion, the 1/4" drive taper will come up against the wedges that are "frozen" due to corrosion. Offset the shoes so that you can get a large screwdriver into the slot and make sure the wee critter will rotate slightly to indicate it is free to allow the shoes to retract as the 1/4 drive taper is backed out. A pinch of PB blaster may be all that's needed.
