Is there an aftermarket chrome or aluminum rear cover avaible? The housing is International, isin't it?

Yup; the aftermarket crowd has a variety of DANA 44 lids to play with, BUT, you will need to address the E-brake support boss that centers the cross rod.
 
I've done this but it's been some years; I think it was Trans-Dapt brand special-ordered from the local truck/Jeep accessories shop, aluminum w/fins. Quite a lot of work to remove the fins below roughly the mid-point of the cover, I'd have to go look but it was to clear the Panhard rod. Looks pretty and I'm even using stainless steel Allen-head bolts... but who can look under there as low as the car is?

BTW, just found this forum, this is my 1st post, been a CAT member since IIRC 1991 when I bought the car.
