Setting TDC

Trying to start my rebuilt 260. It's getting fuel and spark, but it's backfiring through the carb, so I think the timing is off. The Workshop Manual says to set TDC on #6 to position to statically position the distributor, but all the other SBF manuals say to use #1. Anyone been through this recently or know which is correct? TIA.

I know its not kosher however I had to move the dizzi to get it to start and run then moved it again to get the sweet spot.

I’d use 1, even though both 1 and 6 are at the top of a stroke. Timing light would work on either 1 or 6 plug wire since they’re 360 degrees apart. I’d just manually adjust by ear until you can verify with timing light. If engine just rebuilt then it’s important to break the cam in at raised rpm for several minutes, then get timing right.
