I read somewhere that 67-69 Camaro shocks fit a Tiger. Is this true and do they perform properly in terms of compression and rebound with a decent brand like KYB or Monroe performance units?
I bought the KYB's made for a Tiger and love them--much easier than trying to make something possibly work. You can get something a little cheaper but it may not work as well. Just my thoughts.
Agree buy units made for the cars. Koni edelbrock spax and a few UK suppliers day them.. Small change in price difference when you look at it over the cost of their life cycle
and check out Rick's catalog online at Sunbeam Specialties- he carries the correct KYB and Koni shocks for the Tiger. His part #'s are different than the factory part #'s, but he has the right stuff!
One thing I like about Konis is their great customer support. Lee Grimes at Koni has helped me innumerous times with questions, rebuild/revalves and other.
For those that have interest in dampers, the attached link is an entertaining read.
It looks like the GAZ off the shelf damper for the Tiger has an adjuster that affects both compression and rebound. This is pretty typical of low cost/low tech dampers and is not a useful adjustment. As soon as you see things like that, or "30 way adjustable", 999/1000 times, run away
I built new lower mounts mostly because I didn't know if the stock ones would be strong enough to hold the shock AND spring. As a bonus,I made them 1/2" lower than stock so I could get the ride height down ... I also extended the shocks so they wouldn't hang up on rebound before the snubber hit. I'm not sure if either was really necessary now but thought so at the time. I also replaced the studs with grade 8 to hold the brackets. The top of the springs are the same as stock so fit right in the doughnuts.
I've since installed Minx 'drop' spindles and cut the top doughnuts in half so the car is very low in front... but I can always crank the springs up at any time to change that ( they are only up about 1/2" on the shock threads at present... tires are 24" tall.
