Sometimes horn?

Hi,
I just put my steering wheel back on the car this spring after refinishing, and I was reminded that my horn only works sometimes when I press on the horn ring.
I had previously changed the car's wiring harness, so I suspect that the problem is in the column or in the horn switch (ring contact).
Is there a common weak point ?

Thanks,
Paul

Ground?

It seems that most electrical problems with Tigers are due to a bad ground. Since pushing the horn ring is supposed to complete the circuit going to ground, it is fairly easy to determine where the problem lies. The hot wire to the horn ring contact is purple with black strip. Make sure that you are getting the same voltage as at the fuses on that side of the horn ring contact. If the voltage is not close to fuse voltage, check the wiring from the fuse to the horn ring contact.

If that voltage is close to the fuse voltage, you might have poor contacts on the horn ring or a bad ground. Both can be easily checked. It never hurts to pull apart any ground connector and clean. Same is true for the horn ring contacts.

Good luck!

Another 'adjustment' and possibility for intermittent horns is the adjustment screw on the horns themselves...

I agree there are 3 screws that adjust the horn ring if they at\re not adjusted correct, or missing you will have 2 options, no horn or horn going off when you don't need it

Thanks guys,
I just put a meter on the wire right at the steering wheel horn switch ring contact, the voltage is all over the place from 0 to 12V as I turn the wheel, seems to be at its worst in the straight ahead position.
Something to do with the contact at the slip ring? I'll take the column cover off and test there.

Update,
After a bit more checking with the meter, I discovered that there was a dead spot on the slip ring at the on-center position. I used some contact cleaner, all seemed good and it worked great when pressing anywhere on the horn ring with the wheel at any rotation.
Took it for a drive, horn still works but only consistently when pressing on the bottom section of the ring, back to the volt meter.
