Does anybody have a good hint of how to remove the speedo cable from the gearbox tail ? All is in situ in the car so very hard to access...

Haven't needed to look yet myself but I'm told there is an access door in the tunnel if you pull back the carpet.

Good hint. Yes there normally should be an access panel mounted on the left side of gearbox tunnel. Unfortunately the previous owner decided to weld a panel over it. By using an angle grinder could reopen it to almost original condition which is the only good news for today.

Access is quite good now but found another horror down there. No locking plate over the cable flange plus the srew overtighened with a sheared head.
The remains of the thread still in. Hmm, the fun continues...

Also found the newly bought cable from UK has an alu flange but not the longer cylindric shaped metal piece with the O-ring which holds down the plastic gear .

So appearantly I have to reuse the old part together with the cable. Thinking about 2 component glue. Let´s see how it will go...

I bought that same cable from the UK last summer. I should have sent it back. There are some earlier posts on here when Paul, the forum member from France was seeking help with his speedometer problems. I posted a couple of pics and commented that the UK one was also meaningfully longer than original one. As I recall, Randy ("oneoffive") commented it was long enough to fit a mustang!
If you can get your old one apart and adapt the end to the UK cable, please let us know how you did it. Also, I seem to remember seeing that the CAT Parts warehouse at one time also had the cables. A reliable source I would say and great likelyhood it is complete and will bolt up correctly at both ends! Cheers, Gene

If you need a new and correct speedo cable or Gauges for that matter
contact Peter Bayer at:

www.nisonger.com or email him at

Pbayer@bestweb.net

he is the US supplier for Smiths & Jaeger here is the USA and knows the TIGER
stuff backwards and forward. I bought both a Smiths Tach & Speedo ( ala Cobra) for my Tiger and only a purist would even know the difference

I just replaced my cable with the U.K cable. Oddly it is the cable and cable housing only and not the plastic gear, used my old one. The plastic gear is a separate purchase .

My speedo (not speedo's) was bouncing around before, so I thought since it's up on stands I will do the cable. Easy install.

Took the car out............nothing.........the needle doesn't move..........double check fittings..........nothing........won't even bounce like before.

On to plan B.........what was my plan B again?

Mike,

I had the same problem with my speedo bouncing around and then
sometimes it world stop working altogether. I bought these gauges
http://www.nisonger.com/smiths-classic-gauges.htm with the idea
that I would have the original Jaeger gauges rebuilt after I installed the
smiths gauges. I probably won't after having new gauges as the smiths
look correct and the tach goes to 7000 rpm and is accurate whereas
even with a upgrade kit in the Jaeger tach it was useless over 3500 rpm.
Peter will also calibrate the speedo and mine is correct within 1% and who knows what the Jaeger was doing. Plan B....

Cadreamn67 is correct.
Unfortunately I also got the dreaded UK cable with the wrong ends. Cutting the speedo side appears easy however adapting the o-ring end is more difficult. Cutted it from the old cable in the meantime and reglued it to the new one.
Everything installed now with the cable routed perfectly however it still doesn´t turn the instrument. Arrggg !
Cable is disconnected from the instrument again but center still doesn´t turn. Either the wire doésn´t go deep enough into the plastic gear or the gear itself is worn. Appearantly have to cut it again & more to let the center wire go more deeper inside the gearbox tail. Struggle still continuing...

P.S. Thanks for the links. At a certain point of time will try the Nisonger cable instead of wasting more time with the UK crap...

Update:

The gear was worn so got a 16 teeth replacement. Finally the speedo works now. Even though it reads 10-15% high. This is the proof that the UK cable can be made to work but it was painful and took a lot of time...

P.S.

Rick also has the the proper speedo cable for the Tiger. A bit pricey though at 90$ but they DO FIT exactly like the original !

Anybody has a spare 15 teeth gear or knows a source - would love to get the speedo ultimately reading correctly...
