Just got back from a car show in Ames Iowa. The owner of the venue has a brand new DynoJet dyno. He is heavily involved with NASA racing and uses it to certify the race cars. Needless to say, it is very accurate.

So I did three runs.
#1 with air filter (paper filter) on.
#2 air filter removed
#3 +2 degrees of timing, no filter.

The air filter caused a 7.27 HP, 6.27 TQ loss. Not bad at all! This dyno indicated ~20 less RWHP than the "tuner" shop dyno in KC. Puts me at 430 at the crank, I'll still take it.

On the way there, I verified that the VNE (Velocity Never to Exceed) of the hard top is over 135 mph as it stayed on and the back window stayed in.

With my current gearing and tire size, max speed is 142 mph at 6200 rpm. A few more seconds at full throttle and I would have been there. BTW - the Mercedes had no idea what spanked him. ***closed track, professional driver:p****

And Doc says you only need to get to 88 mph to make the time jump...

Without ground effects our little Beams will be airborne by 200 mph!

Q: Has anybody played at the limit to find out ...ok excepting Mayfield's, his was purpose built....

I have run standing start 1 mile races with the East Coast Timing Assn. (E.C.T.A.) Two years ago I held the class record for C Gas Super Street at 163.4 mph.During that run I quit accelerating at about 5/8s of a mile and tried to hold my speed when the back end of the car started to get light. Short of the finish I looked down and saw the RPM had climbed to 5600 . I gently let off the accelerator and coasted across the finish at 163.4 mph. At that time I was running a 3.07 gear , 23.8 in. tire , and a 5 speed with a .75 overdrive . With that combination 5600rpm (Autometer tach) was 172.5 mph .This picture was taken at that time .The speed is about 165-170mph.

I noticed my steering getting a little light at triple digit speeds...probably exacerbated by my front end sitting a little high...I added this little spoiler- doesn't look like it would do much, but, any vagueness I had at speed was totally eliminated.

The stock number plate bracket with plate ( especially uk plate) acts as a splitter. Rootes discovered this at LeMans with the alpines. When they were asked to remove the plates and run stickers on the bonnet top speed and stability dropped.
