Monterey
The Sunbeams did quite well at Monterey. I was busy with the 74 but I believe everyone set personal bests last week.
Due to brain fade, I had the wrong cam in our engine and paid for it by breaking some rocker arms. Regardless, John had the SCF Tiger running great and lowered the car's best time by nearly a second. All the Tigers went against the trend since most of the cars slowed down this year. (This year marked increased enforcement of vintage rules.)
There were two qualifying sessions. In the first, John was 6th fastest out of the 42 cars entered. I decided to use the next session to experiment. John lowered his time a bit but so did many more. John dropped to 10th which is where he was gridded for the qualifying race.
In that race John moved up to 5th but with 2 laps left the shifter ball unscrewed itself. John dropped a place and finished in 6th. The ball was quickly attached, along with a healthy dose of Lock-Tite. The very encouraging part of the race was that John's quick lap was the 2nd quickest among all the competitors in our class.
John started the main race in 6th and within a few laps had moved up to 4th. Unfortunately, this is when a rocker arm decided to break, ending our race. Our placing was somewhere in the mid thirties and we were credited with completing 3 laps. Tom Sakai finished in 15th.
