So spoke to someone in the CAT club who recalls reading an article in the newsletter about a budget disc brake upgrade.
Does anyone have any information on this?

I have a v6 alpine with 13" rims i'd like to keep and would like to run a more contemporary brake package without spending a fortune

Was likely the rx7 upgrade, that said parts on early RX are becoming hard to come by. Think duke wrote it up either on this forum or on saoca a few years back. Search rx7 + brakes

Cost me about $400 at the time but as Michael said, the RX7 guys are on to it and parts are hard to find and much more $$$ now. Four years ago I had trouble finding the parts. I might be talked into selling this conversion this winter so I can buy a Dale A wilwood rear disk conversion.

So this looks like rear only
Anything for upgrading the FRONTS to beyond the original?

You can switch to mi16 calipets and better pads. Also dale a sells better front vented rotors is a stock size. Ebc offer performance pads too.

The stock alpine system with booster working well and softer pads and better rear shoes would be alright in a v6 alpine. Remember that the rears aren't doing that much compared to the front. Also a good set of soft sports tyres make a world of difference.

SAOCA

You will find a lot more budget and junk yard picker types on the Alpine site. The rears on my car are Fiat X19 and state of the art in 1999 as am I you see my smile still has Ray Ban Wayfarers

The STOC site has a detailed article on fitting Pug 406 discs to the front. You need 14" minimum wheels. The adapter is easy to make. The biggest issue was we had is the imperial countersunk bolts used have a 82 degree pitch and metric is 90 degree. The dual calipers bolt straight to the Sunbeam hub.

I believe those would be Peugeot 406 brakes. In the US those would be unobtanium.

With the Wilwood or any other disc brake upgrade should the master cylinder be upgraded too?

Calculations Are ?

With the Wilwood or any other disc brake upgrade should the master cylinder be upgraded too?

The piston(s) volume requirements dictate that the pedal must move enough brake fluid to satisfy the needs plus some safety factor. When adding pistons & volume needs, the upgrade to a tandem master cylinder makes sense because it's moving the same amount of fluids X 2 (or nearly). At the least, a higher bore on a single line system thru a booster works well also. 1-1/2 cents

I have the Wilwood front and RX7 back with the OEM master. ONCE all of the air is out of those Wilwood calipers (takes some time), the system works great. I think the pedal feel is perfect. I am also running a Lockheed booster.

It's less of a problem than what you would think...I have a NOS master cylinder and a brake booster( MK1) rebuilt by Bill Martin. IN the front on Dale's front end I have huge six piston Wilwood calipers and rotors that just fit inside 16" wheels and four piston caliper Wilwood in the rears. I have to be very careful that I don't launch my passenger thru the windshield on a panic stop...

Moondoggie Big Tires also help...lol

Budget

You all miss this in the title? The OP has 13" tires and wheels and is only has to stop a V6 Alpine. Pitt40 has a related thread that's on a bigger budget.

I have an early Wilwood single master installed in 1999 while the pads and the Fiat X 19 rear calipers work about 25% better than stock. No booster. The rebuild kits are available from many vendors including S.S. and there is a You Tube video how too which is great. Lots of choices on boosters that are less fickle than stock ones.

Speed doesn't kill the deceleration does, use a seat belt.

Lou the Brit ones are 582 English pounds ouch! that's $917.52 US plus shipping, I looked again as I am looking at some period correct 13" wheels.
