I'm sure I'm the odd man out and everyone else has been watching sales prices but I am astounded at what I am now seeing. I bought a car in 2008 and have been by no means the poster child for being a classic car owner. Sadly I let it sit too long till it would no longer start and run. It sat in the garage non operational for 3 years. My wife has been bugging me to sell but first I wanted to put some money into her to get the best price I could. She is now back and running very well, better than ever. I've been driving her again. After some investigation into prices it appears she has recently had the price appreciation I expected from Tigers when I bought her. According to Hagerty value guide my car is about a 2 1/2. I just raised her agreed value from $42K to $70K and rather than selling am planning to repaint, re roof and restore the steering wheel, and hold her. She is one of a small group of LROFE cars, an Alpine 260 with proper fender and boot badges.

That's good news

You should run down to Ventura or to the Dyno day. Repaint maybe not as then every chip felt much more.....

It's not just boat guys that say use it or loose it.

Market is hard to judge, better than 2008 for sure, but there are quite a few cars asking silly speculation prices, some being flipped between dealers and auction houses for silly or false money that will be dragging the hagarty/hemmings guides falsely higher.

A good stock car should bring solid prices, lro cars don't seem to hold premium, witness the stunning stock mkii lro car that sold this year for less than some tarted up incorrect mki's.

As a guide I would say between 50-70 depending on the day ... That said get it in an auction where the crowd is fired up and you might walk the 100 bracket.

Tim morins nice mki has been for sale for 70k for a while fresh resto heaps of nos bits and still not moved while some shabby cats have "sold " for 30-40k more than that

And look at the parts that go with the car; also Tim is such a stand up guy and stands behind everything that he sells - I know from experience.

I had in a shop and did gas tank clean out and lines new brakes front and rear new clutch master and slave new brake master new seals on rear end and a lot of smaller stuff. The fellow that owns that Brit car shop and his neighbor who is a Healy mechanic both said how much they liked it and how many other customers were drooling over it. I said if you get anyone wanting it that uses a number over $50k tell them they've got themselves a car. From what I've seen in my first week back in Tiger world that number was too low. At any rate its not currently for sale. Happy to be back and driving her again. When I strip her and do the repaint she will lose the Tiger script put on by a prior owner and get the proper Alpine script again.

I'm told

The Alpine and Tiger script have the same hole pattern. , Max would say Would you believe......

I got this from a long time member who rides his beater around with Alpine script on the wings. The car is a low profile multi primer color Hermosa Beach multi unit parking structure resident, she goes like a scared goat and looks like one too.

I hope you are sitting down when you read an estimate for a complete paint including engine bay and boot.

Most guys, I know paint em then are scared to use them. Use some Stabil in the gas , and get the brakes hot once a month. The clutch slave will go out no matter what you do unless you spend more dough to have the crappy metal cylinder sleeved.

I got paint estimate #1 for $8k to $12k. Does not include complete strip of engine compartment, just partial and respray as far down as they can reach. Does include entire roof compartment and trunk and windshield frame and door frames and jams as well as front and rear valance. They will sand dow to bare metal and repair the few small sheet metal dimples I have. There is also sign of some bondo used long ago in left rear fender. The range of price is based on how much they find when the paint is gone. That price seems reasonable to me but would love to hear other opinions.

Paint job prices are all over the board. When I was looking I was quoted anywhere from $3k - $10k. You need to compare processes too, base coat clear coat, single stage, will it be buffed, etc.... I ended up taking it apart and putting it back together as I didn't trust anyone else to do it right. Good luck in your search.

I waited a year for the body/paint man. My tiger now has a body with correct gaps. bare metal rebuild. Great midnight blue paint. All provided about $30,000
$8,000 was the paint. :)

Man Hours & talents

Prep man-hours can be endless $$$. Prep follows the needs of the project. A good man will back up at some point and say "OK, we can try paint now". Although experience allows us to "guestimate", in the end, it costs what it costs. Pick the people, not the guess.

Values

The fact that one can acquire such an awesome little car for less than $100k is surprising to me. A British, Ford powered Chrysler, that has class, style, power, and a history mingled with Caroll Shelby. They are fun, unique, and can be formidable on a track. Race it or take a leisurely drive. It has decent space for luggage behind the seats and in the trunk. It is a sports car and a 60's muscle car. Why wouldn't they be worth more?!
