Strech

I gave up on my never fitted Robbins tonneau. Even in latitude 34 it's too cold .
Had some good luck though before I gave up by hanging up with a series of clamps and some dive weights. Going to try in Spring to fit on sunny day.

Tops are fitted to a particular car a used one that has been "fit"
to a car will most likely have lift a dot snaps in different place.

When I sold my Blue car I gave the new owner my brand new cover--not sure if it was for that car or the Cleo car. Either way I never used it. They are nice I guess but I prefer the open cockpit look.

Our cars are very versatile appearance wise with hardtop, soft top, tonneau or open. All give the car a different style look. I enjoy the tonneau look.

I went to the trouble of installing a tonneau on mine after I noticed the carpet on the back shelf starting to fade. I'll have to have it redone one of these days.

When I started to install the new tonneau it seemed like it was about 6 inches short as well but worked out fine. I don't think the new ones like Robbins cover the same amount of length (all the way up to the wind screen) as the original.

I did something similar to my new Robbins cover by adding about a 2 Inch strip across the front that extended it up to the glass. The material wasn't an exact match but very hard to tell. Is yours original, does it have the rubber dam running across near the the front edge?

Perhaps a pipe frame could be constructed with threaded fittings to lengthen frame to stretch tonneau over a period of several weeks. Lean / hang on wall. Keep moist? 6 inches is quite a stretch though.

Don't be concerned about resewing as a waste of effort. If you add a new strip of material just have it lapped underneath the old material and hemmed edge. That way if for some reason you want to remove it you can just snip the thread and pull it off without redoing the hem again.

Are you certain that the tonneau has shrunk? How does it fit side to side? If you have only measured it or just held it in place in may be deceiving. Did you try to maybe just attach at 2 front center fasteners and stretch to rear to verify fit?

It looks to be in very good condition. I would think there would be some puckering in the zipper if the tonneau material had shrunk or vise versa but most likely would show in the zipper. The different materials would act differently.

If you do need to add material don't be too concerned about an exact match. You're probably going to have to install a second set of fasteners on one end or the other which will be obvious anyway. Maybe instead of trying to conceal the added material you could make it obvious. If you do need to add a wide strip of material maybe do it across the rear and have SUNBEAM TIGER or something stitched into it along the length in contrasting color or material if it's only for overnight use.

Just a few thoughts to try and help.

Tonneau cover

I had a cover made of canvas and it doesn't shrink as does the vinyl and it looks nice.

Synthetic Canvas

The boat cover material is great comes in many colors and is impervious to bird poo. Now a days it seems much easier to find a boat cover guy than a good car upholstery trimmer, at the coast anyway:cool:
