Tool for fitting/removing door handles (inside)

Hello, as we have no functioning Sunbeam forum here in Australia,
I thought I would post this general question to our esteemed Sunbeam owners who may have an answer to my problem
of removing and refitting the internal window and door opener handles. I have been fixing some minor problems with my alpine that included removing and replacing the internal handles. Same problem with Tigers

The spring tension of the escutcheon means that removing and reinserting the pins is very difficult. I have used small screwdriver blades and a flat spanner.
Both options are not suitable. I feel I am going to insert the screwdriver blade in my hand. Or the door cover.
The worst part is that I managed to refit the door opening handle and then realized I had not reconnected the door limiter.
At this stage, I locked the Sunbeam in the garage and came inside the post this enquiry. And have a cold one.

I did this not that long ago.. while the spring tension is high, i used a finger on each side to hold the escutcheon down with even pressure, then used the punch that i used to remove the pin to assist with holding the escutcheon back while i tapped it out. It was harder to put it back on.

What are you using to get the pin out? If you use a small punch it will fit in nicely and is less likely to slip out and stab you or the door.
 
Some of my pins (original?) appeared to be tapered so may be easier to remove from one end than the other. All just straight pins now. Ornery cusses. A third hand might help. I found in one case a pair of chipped black escutcheons inside the door were used as spacers to hold the door panel out.
 
Thanks all, got the door openor off and on, the window winder is a bugger, went and bought a tool thats supposed to push the escunshion (I hate that word) in so the pin can fit. Had 6+ goe's. Now I know why the Rootes group bought into pubs. I have now decided to remove the left tank that was leaking fuel when it was full. Yep, finally got it out, 2" of fuel sitting in the lower rear guard. :eek:
At this time on a Saturday arvo, the car is packed away and will conitinue tomorrow. I also did a pressure test on the tank with my garage compressor and some plastic stuff from the wife's kitchen (she was out). Yes, it is the tank gauge leaking. Have now fitted a cork seal, hammered the locking tab (how primitive) so I will check tomorrow to see if I have a sealed tank again.

I am glad my restore is receiving the treatment it requires. When my Tiger comeas back from the body man I can revisit it all again. It must be a 60+ thing, I can't imagine any of my 5 children (all adult) doing any of this.
 
I am a little more crude--I used a nail once the bezel was pushed back against the door panel. If no nail is present then you can also use a new rivot. :)
 
A nail works well especially if the peak is ground off. If it doesn't move out give it a good slap with a hammer...
