What's up with cubby box staples?

I just bought another cubby box to replace the 3rd that has been in the car since I bought it. I replaced the beat up original. Had the dash re-done and another was installed but didn't fit properly. Don't know if cubby box opening was cut too big or dash shifted to right a tad too much. There is a channel shaped piece the dash is screw attached to on the right hand side. Definitely sticks into the opening so there has been a gap on that side since new dash. Intend on grinding back a bit.

I see there is a new row of staples along the bottom back corner of the new replacement cubby box. The previous box was made from one piece so there was just a fold in that area. New box is 2 pieces so stapled together there.

So was the original box stapled together as well? I hate those staples. They stick out like a sore thumb but don't stand out as bad after they start to rust some.

Also the previous box was stapled together very neatly, all the staples lined up. Now they are at different angles and some only one leg is holding together.

I agree - ugly!! Better get out some gray paint, a touch up box, and then put some maps in there!

who did you buy it from?

is your car RHD? if not , you have a problem since the box in the photo is for a RHD car. the originals were put together with large rivets .

Ha, ya got me! I've been looking at that box for so long from every possible angle that I didn't notice I had the image flipped. Took pic with box upside down because it sat better then just rotated the image but didn't flip right to left.

I pulled all the staples, patched the holes, aligned joints correctly and glued it back together. I did the same with previous box and it lasted 20+ years. Looks much, much better.
 
Here is a silly question----I am about to install mine and how do you get to the top screws?
 
Arrgggg. I didn't want to hear that!

I just finished putting on the last of the dash lettering left of steering wheel. The surround on the heater control is on upside down so lettering just barely fits (didn't know till it was done).

Now I'll be sliding over to the other side of car to take a look see at the cubby. Do some grinding first on that bracket. The box may clear adjacent items better as it is about 1/2" less deep than previous box. Now have flanges to deal with that weren't on old box. Maybe do a little #@!$ then.
 
Heard em called

Aggravating little cars, for example when you move the steering collum around R and R the clamshell cover the center sheet metal screw goes thru the same space as the wires for the horn and turn signal.

Lot of fun putting in the screw and having the horn ground and blast till the screw was removed. R and R again and noticed PO had the same problem and fixed with electrical tape. The speed nut is the kind designed for a sheet metal screw to boot. WTH were they thinking? now I know why the screw was missing when I got the car! Lucky something else did not ground and fry.

Yes, a Sharpie was involved ;) as well as a narrow blade screwdriver to fold / push material caused by staple back into holes.

Sounds like you may have personal experience with something similar?
