Why does my cubby have a hole?

My Alpine has a new-from-SS cubby (sticker is still on it), and it has a big hole on the right side towards the front. I was surprised to see in the SS catalog that it is supposed to be there-- apparently a "handhold cutout". Hard to believe that people would want a handhold at the expense of a cubby where the contents fall out. What am I missing?

My Tiger does not have a hole...

You are missing nothing, its for Grandma

To hold on to and gloves what else would you put in the glove box? a scarf and a cap.

That is the price of having a factory correct part, repeating the same flaws.

IDK about the staples though that has been a nit fellas like to pick at.

I have one sold in new old car with a 1999 recpt. from S.S. and it looks like I made it out of the recycling bin with a hot glue gun and the P.O. said that's what it looked like when it came from S.S. So they have really improved from that version!

There really is no place for the passenger to hang on to other than the cubby cut-out while getting the ride of their life even if it's only to the market.

I'd suggest going to the trouble of removing and gluing the cubby box together. I'm still not sure whether the OEM cubbys had staples or not. I have a pic in my profile / special parts of how nice the box looks without staples.

Shouldn't question be "why doesn't tiger have grab hole?"

and the answer would be...

Its a replacement; but do you have a cubby door too? It would be silly to have a door with a hole, obviously.

I'm going to say, 'yes, orig has staples too.'

As always, answers are relative to #382000428 and not necessarily any other car before or after.

Hole

My Alpine has the hole there too. I always wondered if it was really for hanging on to, as it didn't seem like a strong spot to support any kind of pulling on or ect. It's original. Never looked/noticed any staples though?

The original glove box in mine doesn't have staples. I think it has two brads on the sides and then some rivets along the bottom that are covered under the flocking.

There is a metal border piece that is riveted to the opening of the hand hold area to keep things in the cubby. I think I have one in the parts box if interested.

Ah! That seems more appropriate. Thanks

box

I pulled 4 original cubby boxes off the shelf today and found they were assembled using 28 rivets of the type that bend over after inserted thru the material. no staples at all. i'll try to post some photos soon.

Corrected

Earlier post I made suggested staples in cubby...they are certainly studs as Mr. Lyle has clarified here and I misspoke.

Wish I saw a pic from behind though... Doug? ;-)
