Wiring Question

Hi All

I just noticed that I have a white wire floating around unconnected under the dash. Actually it is 2 wires that exit the harness and terminate in a single spade connector. All gauges, instruments, and switches work perfectly. The only place I can think of where it might connect (according to the wire diagram) is the tach.

The PO installed a pertronix system. Is it my understanding that such a system would change the tach wiring. Correct? My tach has 2 green wires connected in addition to the wires for ground and illumination...and works perfectly.:)

Also, if it is the old tach white wire, is there any current in the unconnected wire? :O Just curious since I noticed the insulation was frayed/melted in places.

Thanks

Hello,

Since your car is running the Pertronix distributor and fact that Tach is working properly, the PO likely converted tach to more modern electronic unit to run off the coil versus the original pulse setup (likely the unhooked white wire you speak of originally looped at back of tach to provide the pulse to reflect RPM's). In addition to providing the RPM pulse to the original tach, white wire ran from the "run" position off the ignition switch to ballast resistor. White wire may continue to provide 12 volts to the ballast resister - to confirm, use your voltmeter to test (with car in run position on your ignition switch).

Easy Enough

Not sure why I did not think of/do that. Tomorrow when I fire up the engine I will check the voltage at the connector at the end of the dangling white wire .

I still have 3 white wires running from pin #2 on the Ignition switch which is hot with the key in the on position. So my guess is that the dangling wire is still hot when the engine is running. I will know tomorrow.

Thanks
