I've made and sold about a dozen of the Autometer tach conversions using Paul's artwork.
I recently decided that it was just too much hassle with getting all the 'bits' back and forth across the border and sold all my spare Jaeger stuff to Paul so he is the only one making complete units now.I used to sell them to club guys for $325 complete & shipping. Paul's last 2 on ebay went for $795  and one last week was $340 .I think he still has enough parts to make a couple more and I don't know what his direct price is ( Autometer tachs have gone up a bit ) but if you want to just get him to do the face for you, I can send you some instructions on how to do the rest. You will need a new Autometer 201004 Cobra 4" tach,a 4"inner bezel, 4" outer 'full v' chrome bezel and glass all from either a 4" Jaeger speedo or tach... Even early Alpine, or other Rootes gauges. The needle/indicator must be from a Jaeger tach. Your donor gauge face will have to be redrilled for different mounting centers ( Paul can do that ) and the old holes filled. He will then respray it and apply the lettering. There are a few mods to the Autometer case needed to get all this stuff to fit on it.
The first one I ever built is still in my car and works great!! Here's a pic... ( Paul also made the cool 'Jaeger' voltmeter from a Sunpro gauge! )

Love the voltmeter. Does he still do them?

So tell me why running the tach wire from an MSD box or a wire from the coil will not allow the stock tach to work?

Hi PTT40
the original Tiger tacho units worked by a circuit called RVI ,which picked up the pulses via the loop on the back of the instrument.
Later Smiths gauges and others, use a more reliable RVC circuit, which is contected to the coil Negative side.
You could have your original tacho converted to RVC,perhaps North Hollywood Speedo,In California,I belive that is what they are called may, do this for you.
Hope this helps.

Simple answer.... there's no place to attach it as the stock tach uses a 'current?' sensing loop of wire from the ignition switch on the back of the tach ...

Here's a fix that makes a direct connection that I tried years ago but wasn't happy with it... http://www.sunbeamalpine.org/downloads/alpine_tach_repair_rev5.pdf

... and a more substantial 'fix' from Tom Hall/Theo Smit ... http://members.shaw.ca/tsmit/tachmod/tachmod0.html

The topic was discussed on this forum not that long ago... http://catmbr.org/VB_forum/showthread.php?t=318

I think others have had limited success taking their tach to various repair shops

IMHO, the Autometer is very good option...

I did the Autometer conversion a couple of years ago using Paul's redone alpine tach face, as has been mentioned it hooks directly to the 'tach' wire on the msd box and it looks and functions great.

Below is what Paul sent me regarding buying the bezel. It's 2 years old so some of the links might be out of date.

From Paul:

Forget Victoria British...they sell cheap stuff...

For chrome bezels i get them from a couple people who are on Ebay UK website.

if you go to www.ebay.co.uk you can search on 2" chrome bezel and 4" chrome bezel

For the most bang for your buck (best price) you can get them from "mjcprod" (MJC Products), he sells the bezels, glass, square rubber gaskets (going between the gauge and the dash) and the knurled nuts. I buy most of my stuff from him.

You can also buy the bezels by themselves from him if you want. You can also deal directly with him.

Here is a link to his small gauge bezel kit auction...

For the Autometer tachometer conversions you need the larger 4" bezels ONLY. You will need to use the glass from the Autometer tach, so be careful and don't damage it when removing the old chrome bezel.

Here is a link to the 4" bezel kit...

I believe you can buy the chrome bezels alone if you contact the seller directly.

I have bought bezels on Ebay UK from "djmalm1" also known as "Auto Electric Spares" and most recently I have bought from "emgeedave" also known as "MG Car Spares"

I hope I got everyone's name right!

There is one other guy...I forget his name and ebay username... some thing about Classic Spare Bits??? or something like that.

Mainly the best thing to do is to get these from the UK...homeland of the Sunbeam Tiger & Alpine!

Hope this helps.

I have a Petronix Ignitor on my stock distributor , installed since 1998.
The rpm work fine , my car his a MKII , is it why it his working !!!!

So from what I'm reading, if I take the tach wire from my MSD box and wrap it around the terminal on the tack where the white wire loops around, it may or may not read properly? Most likely not, but at least it should make the tach work in some way.
