If you have a choice of Headers sizes,

What size do you choose?

Back in 2015, Peter Thomson, from Australia

reports there was a comparison of the old style

1 1/2" LAT/CAT,etc headers and the Newer S&S/CAT style 1 5/8" Headers.

The test subject was a warmed up 289.

As you could maybe guess, the Smaller tube headers

bested the Bigger tube headers in Max Torque.

But, could you guess the Smaller Tube Headers

Bested the Bigger tube Headers in Max Horse Power Also??

Dan,

What is the difference in header length and path between the smaller and larger pipe headers?
Or are they the same design just different ID size?

The smaller headers are good for the smaller engines, and the larger not much loss for them, but many folks might be running 302's or larger where I think the 1 5/8" would work well but not the smaller. Not sure, not enough info or testing or how stock the 289 was. Might be a good call to see what folks are running and if the stock 260/289 motors are more representative then ones with more work (and RPM range). Pretty sure the story would be this, smaller tubes work better for the stock or near stock, and the larger tube for the rest.

The Balenger LAT header with the side take off have a longer collector than the Balangers without the take off.
2015 in Aust, I would guess the shorter collector header?
