Shocking Numbers !!

So what will the dollar buy?

And the Tiger was brand spanking new! That filter looks a little rough around the edges! When my Dad was stationed in London in 1966 the exchange rate was so good we could buy anything over there for a song!

"Adjusted" for inflation...

What costs $1450.00 in 2012 would cost about $201.88 in 1965. I don't know what the air filter housings sold for back then but it's gotta be considerably less than 2 bills -clearly the market value of these things is now based on completely different criteria.

It could be mental illness, deep pockets, or one of the 7 deadly sins.

On the other hand, maybe eventually I'll be able to sell my air filter housing for even much bigger bux because I had Carroll sign it. :)

Easier

To go modified or personalized. I had a fellow Tiger owner tap mine to see it it was metal. The fiberglass ones are nice and there is even a process for chroming plastics. There also is a chromed one on Ebay now get em while they are hot.

Oops forgot pic.

Here is a nice modified car with a original AC air cleaner in case you like old and new together.

And to think I couldn't wait to throw mine away back then . . . . .

You were not alone. And those actions are the reason that it sells for $1600 today. If every tiger still had the original filter on it, there would be no demand for it.

I am so pleased I paid $150 back in 2001. Of course I refused to pony up $400 for a Book of Norman back then................

What surprised me was the condition of the housing for the money. It was quite pitted (but the hammertone does cover that) and the sleeve on the mounting holes was quite badly damaged and the whole thing needed a bit of work.

I always wonder about the ebay auctions if a bit of shilling goes on.. SO MANY bids makes me wonder.. its the early nudging of the price that looks a little odd. In the past 12 months i have helped 2 members find housings.. much better condition than this and both were under US$750

Robot bidding

I hear what you are saying about the early bidding. It seems like any serious bids would now be placed thu the bid sniper or W/E ebay call their last 45 to 15 second robot program.
I put a allen head bolt on mine so it takes more than a screwdriver or fingers to remove it. I think soon I may chrome mine after brazing a id tag on the inside so if it ever goes missing someone will have to pay to rechrome or suffer with rattle can not LAT dress up hammertone. Yes they are shocking numbers. Having seen the member made fiberglass ones at the last CAT Club Fix-In Swap meet maybe I'll just get one of those and put it on the car and keep the OG under my pillow. :)

Nice Christmas presents for you!

Michael, You found two in the last 12 months for 750.00 each in better condition!! Those should be very good friends for life!! I would imagine.

i would hope so... I have done much more than that for one of them...

As for the prices... I am very skeptical of some e-bay sales.. this is one. There are certain items that spike to such high prices that i am concerned shill bidding is involved. I really wish ebay disclosed the bidder ID's still.

I can see 1k being paid for the cleaners in an open ebay auction and in good condition, there are guys on the forum here who have sold them in the past 12 months for the 7-800 bracket.

Either there is something strange in the auctions.. or perhaps its the same buyers who pay 70K+ for those average Tigers at the auction missing these parts... and are now getting screwed a second time to try and get the missing bits

I am looking for one but so far my good deeds have not flushed one out. I am using buddy Warrens oval aluminum cleaner for now. I am exploring other options to get one. Thinking of going to Warrens house and replacing his with a fiberglass one also may use a projector to project the image of one on my car. Lee

This ones @ $1025.00

Maybe I'll just keep pursuing this project.

I have one of the finned Tiger ones that is an unfinished project.. was a casting that hasn't been drilled yet. I was shocked at how heavy the alloy casting is.. would be much nicer to have them stamped in steel.. but tooling would be prohibitive.. unless you did a very short run and could use a lightweight stamp.

If you are going to CNC one make sure its done to match the size of a common base-plate and filter you get from summit etc.. the original ones are an odd size.

That's the Plan. I am having a bottom made also it should fit a K&N E-3515 filter.

I was thinking it would be better to make the top profile match an off the shelf oval filter so that you can use a off the shelf base as it will be lighter.. cast or CNC will be very heavy... just CNC the top one and use an off the shelf bottom plate.
