I have a Tiger with a Boss302 engine fitted.

I was going to use standard 20/50 oil as per normal, but the dip stick says use 101-b spec oil to maintain warranty.

Can anyone shed a light on this ?

thanks

Jeff > I too have a Tiger the is fitted with a True blue , Canted Valve Head Boss 302 . I run Kendell 20/50 Racing Oil . Never heard of 101 - b spec . I heard rumors that Ford offered Boss owners a swap out dip stick not much after taking delivery . The new stick had a different level marking , whch added like 1 qt. more to the capacity . Yours may be the first design , original . Mine does not state that "Use 101-b spec Oil" on the stick . But mine is a swap out .
Hope this helps .

Oil

For what it's worth, I have a 56 Ford truck that I installed a 1964 Ford big block FE in. Roller top end, edelbrock 428 heads and shelby medium rise manifold. Makes 500 hp. I use Valvoline ZR1 oil in it with added zinc. No problems so far.
Since they are both ford engines and are of the same year maybe that would work for you. For break in I used straight valvoline 20-30 for the first 1000 miles.
Just my 2 cents.

thanks for the information on the dip stick.

I just measured mine and its 19 3/4 inch from the underside of the cap to the high level marking.

Is yours the same ?

thanks

I believe that Ford 101-B oil spec means that the owner was supposed to use an oil with an API "SD" service grade. This was the then-current grade for 1968-1970 engines. I do not believe it was a viscosity (10W50, for example, which is per SAE) specification. Motor oils have progressed from the SA grade to SB, then to SC, etc. They differed mainly in the amounts and types of additives used.

I found the reference to Ford 101-B oil in a document published by the University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service. You can take a look - https://extension.tennessee.edu/publications/Documents/SP399-B.pdf. Hope this answers the original question. Maybe someone else out there has more knowledge about this subject.

For more of a background in API grades (or Service Rating) and SAE viscosity rating, check out page 22 of a document written for Ford Model T engines at http://rmaford.org/wp-content/blogs.dir/396/files/2012/01/WHICH_OIL_TO_USE_by_Russert_and_Wiedeman_Rev_C_Mar_2012.pdf.

Kendall 20W-50 GT-1 Racing Oil

F.Y.I. The Kendall GT-1 High Performance Oil "With Liquid Titanium" is one of the few oils other than Valvoline that are still available with the Zinc Additive. This is a very wise choice for flat tappet Engines as well as all others for added wear protection. I have a friend who builds Ford Racing Engines for many famous Off Road Racers and he uses and recommends the Kendall and Valvoline Racing Oil products with the Zinc already Added.

Another Motor Oil with ZDDP

I saw that there is another option for folks wanting to get a motor oil with ZDDP additive. I have not used it and have not compared it with any of the other oils cited (amount of additives, cost, etc.). This company offers their oil in three viscosities - SAE 30, 10W-40, and 20W-50. The company was founded by the original founder of Surf City Garage, which makes car cleaners, waxes, and equipment. Maybe someone else out there has used their products and can comment.
