I want to remove my steering wheel to refinish it and check out the contacts of my non working horn. While I am waiting for a workshop manual, can anybody please tell me how the steering wheel is removed...it is the original.
thank you

Yank really really hard !

Assuming that the telescoping still works (or not), gently pry off just the top of the soft center hub. There will be a conventional nut under there, and the rest is basic mechanics. Pay close attention as to how it comes apart so you don't get the order of re-assembly askew. If you need a few pics, send a PM w/your E-mail to us.

Are your horns the OEM (not so) Clear Hooters? If you find the contacts at the steering wheel are contacting okay, you might try adjusting that big nut on the horn body. It adjusts the loudness, and the horn is the loudest just before it stops working at all. Mine seem to stop working periodically, but a bit of trial and error adjusting seems to get them going again. Cheers, Gene

Thanks for your replies. The horn problem may in fact be the horn itself as I had the column open yesturday to check the turn signal switch and tried the horn circut with a jumper wire....nothing. Will try the large nut as described tomorrow after checking continuity.

Opps:eek::eek: My bad. That adjuster is really a medium sized slotted screw, not a big nut. It's on the top, near the terminals side of the horn. It's the only thing that looks like it could be adjusted, but I did not want you to be looking for a big nut that does not exist. If you have horn hole blockoff plates like me, you probably will need to take the horn out to get to the adjuster and work with it on a bench with a 12 battery supply. At least I do. Cheers, Gene
