1966 mk1a parts wanted

I bought a pretty original 1966 mk1a and would like to keep it that way. Most would probably restore the body and interior but I like it the way it is.

Need a few parts that are nicer than the ones on my car. Maybe you can help me with some stuff from your junk pile. Here is the list. Warren says Paul and others have a pile of original stuff. Here is what I am looking for: One or two black vinyl covered gas tank covers without the end ears broken off (I think Bruce has one for me that is better than mine), a mirror nicer than mine, driver quality hubcaps (no big dents), license plate light nicer than mine, used windshield water bottle (think mine is a mk1), two original seat belts, used brake and clutch pads better than mine and tiger gas pedal pad, dash pad not cracked like mine, nice original drivers side carpet, two original kick panels (mine have speakers mounted. Some people like original some like modified. I will add to this list as I see more stuff. Thanks for your help

I am still looking for original rims and white wall tires to put on the car and drive.

Use Original Seat Belts?

Lee,

Are you wanting original seat belts to use while driving your car or to change out to when your car is in a show?

Original seat belts would be nearly 50 years old. These are safety devices - your life (or that of your passenger) might rely on them to work. Unfortunately, they do deteriorate with time.

There are new belts that look just like the original ones which will work properly in an emergency.

Something to think about.

Lee--I have an extra set of pedals, I will check the pads. You want "used" looking ones, right? I also have a extra lic plate light assy, how used do want it to look?

Yes, used parts in good condition, I know it sounds weird. My license plate light is missing most of the plating, mirror is about 1/4 water damaged. Lee

Well, I got a couple items on your list, but I sure don't have a pile, I don't like junk, so I move out everything I can. I have two Tiger rims, have a washer bottle, but no lid. So let me know if you have a lid. I have one hubcap in decent shape.

Paul

Paul generously sent me a few items. Thanks! I may be covered with hubcaps if Bruce has a couple presentable ones. I forgot to add I need to repair the zippers on my original convertible cover. If you have a trashed one I need two zippers and parts to repair mine. Want to use the original zipper. Lee

I will be in Monterey this week if you have any of this stuff. Also need the rubber moulding that fits around the hood up by the vin # approx 6 feet long. Dont want a new one because it is made out of a different rubber and the two rubber hood bumpers in the same area. Mine are badly cracked and not really usable. Still would like a couple black seat belts and the original type screws that hold the hood latch mechanism. My guy used allen bolts. I will use new seat belts when I drive the car. Thanks Lee

Thanks Bruce for the hubcaps and parts. I also need the black vinyl cover (driver side) piece over the convertible top with the zipper in good used condition and an original hood lock mechanism. Mine was painted.

Lee iirc LHD tigers didn't have an accelerator pedal rubber... The tiger ones are aftermarket. Which tank covervdo you neec left or right?

On the battery hold down and ammeter I have those in my stash but may be a while before I can access them

Thanks again Mike for the good information. Then I don't want an accelerator rubber if it is not stock Tiger. Took it off the list. I think I need the gas cap side trunk piece. I have the trunk platform stand (not sure what it is called) on mine, just need an unbroken cover. The end where the hole is always seems to breaks off. Lee

Lee--I wonder if you could go to a craft or art supply store and find some type of cardboard piece to use for the trunk sides---paint it black and leave it outside for a few weeks. Just a thought.

Lee, the correct board material is still available but I guess you are looking for patination on the parts.... An Alpine series 3 -V part would do... Contact Eric G (65sunbeam) or all mason on the saoca forum they are likely to have them.

"Similar" material?

I know there is a USA suppier of it... but http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/p-1648-millboard.aspx

Cant find the stateside one right now

Cool find, thanks for posting! "Millboard"

I know how these discussions go... but I'll throw myself in again.

The computer doesn't do justice, I'm sure. And the material looks much better and more authentic than a sheet of plastic. But, that grain doesn't look 'correct' to me (v. orig 382000428 anyway). Also curious about thickness and back pattern and color. ?

For as much B&M'ing there can be here on some of the posted FS cars themselves, I figure if we do the same for the individual parts SOMEONE will mfg even better matches at some point. Perhaps wishful thinking...

Now I've learned enough here to know that Michael can be as detail oriented as it comes, so I'm on shaky turf awaiting his distinction. ;-)

(poking the sleepy bear... in good fun...)

ADD: Another UK supply, but multiple thicknesses. Impossible to see grain. http://www.hewitonline.com/Millboard_p/pp-311-000.htm http://www.automobiletrim.com/millboard.html

Having already done one 1000 pt restoration I know that original cannot usually be used on a competition car. That said I learned some valuable lessons on the show circuit. Here are two very interesting things that happened to me. I insisted on using my original front windshield. The reproduction windshield was not correct to original and tinting was noticeably different. If you used the reproduction windshield you would not loose any points. I lost a point because my original windshield even after it was polished was not perfect. I also used some nos door sill plates, the reproduction were not exactly correct. Lost a point because of a scratch. Reproduction poverty caps were better than original, I used those on my car. Kind of like our reproduction air cleaners. They will chrome better than an original one. The show circuit is really tough. Those parts you discovered above may be a nice option to the plastic ones many are using. Lee

Stupid is as stupid does

Lee, thanks for sharing with me as I learn.

That's asinine. If the intent is to have an original car, it can only be done once...or twice if something is super near it chronologically. It's why I appreciate your plan.

I happen to have 3 shoebox ford woody rolling cars. Went to a show in Santa Barbara last summer and was knocked out by a car I came across that looked as if it had been driven from its barn on the prairie. Nothing new on it, it everything was original stock and as nice as one would expect for a car being driven on occasion, but largely left in a barn. I got in touch with the owner and he had followed your plan. Bit by bit, a correct part and when a better one became available he'd trade up. Was super super cool.

So, like too many other things, the concours is 100% money based. Being able to use replacements is too easy...with unlimited funds, one can do almost anything. Except buy time...or something not available.

I'm kind of trying to use your model, keeping as much original stuff that would blend with the overall overhaul of the car. E.g perhaps once the engine bay gets mucky again, I'll revert back to all original faded carpets at some point.

This has me planning to use the original but flawed windshield btw. Has a tiny chip mid glass and delamination bubbles on the edges. But I'm open to opinions. Sort of. The new ones are very nice. And new. But like you said, not correct original.

And yeah these pressed panels look quite interesting for sure...

Plastic

Is crap, amazed Lee hasn't cobbled some paneling looking for the period correct mods.
:)
I suppose since its on his list we may see some material hawked next to an AC filter housing...

The pattern on the board is slightly different, but as close as you will get new. If you get the large boards from a 60 jag they are apparently a close match and can be cut down to size for our cars.
